baw 4,360
Sandymere, I've got a 3/4 collie cross f****d its jaw on a sheep fence trying to get a poxy rabbit. Any dog can hit a fence. I've lost 3 dogs in the field, 2 hitting obstacles and 1 it's heart exploded. It's a dangerous life that of a working lurcher. Quote Link to post
sandymere 8,263
Exactly. Ps for those who are anti grey feet, notice the nice feet on that bitch lol. Quote Link to post

rob190364 2,594
If I can interject into the jay fest, I'd agree you cant base greys abilities on Waterloo dogs as they were not working dogs but trained/bred to course not catch. As to running into fences/injuries etc Ive had one bull cross kill itself, it was a half cross slow heavy type, one deerhound/grey/ bull break its wrist jumping and one grey wreck itself running through a single strand of wire, the black dog in the pic, along with 3 greys badly injured on the track. The greys was a racer, the bull cross an expericened lamp dog, the DH cross a sapling on exercise. Does this mean a greys run into things and are not suitable to run on a track? Bull crosses run into things so don't make good lamping dogs and DH crosses will all break their wrists? Of course not!Certainly many greys are big heavily muscled dogs that will struggle as workers but a small type with proper upbringing will do a decent enough job, likely no better or worse than many lurchers. My old rabbit bitch is getting on and when she goes I'll be after a medium sized nippy type to replace her as that's the sort that suits what I want where I am. I've got a 3/8 bull so I'll be after a pure rabbit lamper. A whippet might be a choice on dryer ground but would be up to its belly in the mire here so not really suitable but it will be a long dog of some sort and if a small pure grey was available at a sensible price then I'd be happy to buy it, if it did as well as the little bitch I lamped back along it would do just fine. They are stunning animals what an animal!! Quote Link to post

sandymere 8,263
Cheers rob, Sweater, you could ask why everyone isn't running bull crosses or collie crosses, horses for courses plus they are expensive as pups. As to poor bone and bad feet have a proper look at the last pic I posted. I've taken a fare few hares with pure greys they not the best but then nor is the average lurcher. Bare in mind the average fen dog would never win a race against pure grey around your local track but a pure grey will catch the odd hare, each are specialists but specialism gives shortcomings in other areas but doesn't mean they are all bad. Ferretboys1 1
A track dog or ex track dog will always be trouble waiting to happen when worked i a field because its trained to race and not worked like it should hens the injury's and deaths . a field worked dog will always better because its trained to chase its prey and have been from a pup but most will have something happen to them as they are not fit to do so anyway plus i don't know any breeder of racing dog that spend hundreds or thousands of pounds to have there best dog fxxxxxd up or die for chasing a rabbit or fox or deer. That's why they have been crossed with other breeds to get worst out of them and the best put into them........ that's my opinion Quote Link to post
