The use of pastoral dogs to produce lurchers goes back to the times when the common man couldn't own any dog above terrier size unless it was used for herding/droving. Put a rough coat over a longdog

If pure greys were the most suitable dog for the job, then why doesn't everyone use them........................answers on a postcard please......

well if theyre no good either then why are the 1st most used as a dog to make a lurcher?

Starting a line usually starts with the grey or whippet, then the only time you'd really need to add a pure again would be if you needed some speed or hybrid vigour back into the line, though theres plenty of lurchers with speed enough to add into your line. Personally though after using the pure to start I'd personally wouldn't go back to a pure again. I'm not sure but I don't think many of the coursing lads use pures much in there breeding these days. :victory:

At the end of the day; Greyhound is THE base breed for Lurchers. Just imagine Lurchers without any Greyhound in them ? Of course you could use Whippets, Deerhounds,Salukis as the base breed... but why have we used Greyhound for hundreds of years ? For the speed, of course !! The other breeds all add to the mix, but they'd be a sorry bunch without Greyhound SOMEWHERE in their breeding !!

Cheers.
