browning gts 11
calling all rat trappers im in need of some advise on the best rat trap to use around my chicken coop . at the moment i am opperating a couple of tunnel traps with fenn mk6 inside and a couple of norfolk trapper cages, i seem to be having limited success some 3 a night sometimes none at all , the rats make there way to and fro between my cattle sheds and chickens and have well established runs , i did spend a couple hours out with the 410hushpower about a week ago and had 18 but this hasnt made a difference , i have a rat attack smoker and a patterdale plus my mates terriers to and smoked them around november agin this seemed to make little difference, any help would be greatly apriciated thanks in advance for any advice. tom Quote Link to post
Bunny Boiler 177
Sounds like a fairly decent population. Keep smoking them, keep traps out. Mk4's may prove more helpful. Also, poison may help. Sometimes its not always a problem of killing them, but stopping them living. By this i mean you may need to tidy up. All living things need 3 things. Shelter, food and water. Remove two of these and you make the rats either die or move on. Get you chicken feeders/drinkers off the floor. Remove any place they may want to live, such as old feed bags, hay bales etc. Any spilled grain or wheat, tidy it up. Worse case scenario, ask a professional opinion. These are all things that will reduce rat numbers. Quote Link to post
browning gts 11
thanks for your reply , forgot to say the council bait the farm , the chicken feeders are hanging from string in the coop the only place they can live is in the straw barn as im a bit ott on keeping the farm clean , i have a four acre paddock behind the sheds with a thick hedgebank , i reckon thats there hq . whats the difference with the mk4 ? thanks again Quote Link to post
Bunny Boiler 177
Mk4 is slightly smaller. I would use a mk4 for the smaller vertebrates as it means it won't bounce them out of the jaws. Some people may disagree however. Quote Link to post

Millet 4,497
I have alway's had better success with Mk4 fenn's buried on a well established run..bury them just below the surface on the run and sprinkle some loose soil over the plate with no stones in it..i also like to sprinkle a little bit of wheat/barley over the trigger plate..then place a box over the trap's to stop any cat's or dog's getting caught..
