Country Joe 1,411
My reason for asking this question was because, the dog had just sliced the top of one stopper, probably a stone. And it was my Vet that said to use salt water three times per day to harden the pad on this stopper, I just thought, there may be better alternatives out there, and was interested what they are. Had a look at some Greyhound Forums, but what some find as beneficial, others will slate.
Bosun11 537
Salt water will both clean the wound and harden new skin, so no problems there. I thought you were simply looking to harden both as a prevention but there is no need.
socks 32,253
When I was racing greyhounds I tried all manner potions to harden pads and nothing works ... The toe pads will harden with road work but unfortunately if you have a dog with soft stopper pads the only way they harden is by being damaged and the resulting scar tissue callausing thus tuffening the stopper .........
Country Joe 1,411
Thanks Bosun, and Socks, Yeh I reckon you are right, pad is not to bad, and healing. I think next time Ferreting, I may put a strip of vetwrap round the stopper, just for a wee bit of protection.

leegreen 2,221
Surgical spirit can be used to harden your skin ( feet and hands ). Not sure it would work on the dogs, but it won't hurt to try, but wait until your dogs stoppers have healed. Truth is genetics give dogs good stoppers.
