walshie 2,804
I just renewed my driving licence online as it expires in a couple of weeks and I've had no reminder. Apparently it can be £1000 fine if you don't so that's probably why they don't remind you in time. Good thing about it is if you have renewed your passport in the last 5 years, they can use the photo off that instead of sending new ones to DVLA. Bad thing is they charge £20 and they now need your N.I number "to verify" who you are. More Big Brother? Why on earth would they want your N.I number? Conspiracy theorists, your comments please. neil82 1,080
if you`ve got the old paper license your ok, its only the new photo-card one that needs renewing every ten years, needs some one with a big enough set of balls (and bank account) to take this to court to find out the crack with the photo-card license as the way it was, the only people who could take away your right to drive used to be the courts or DVLA on medical advice
paulus 26
why carnt you use you old photo license as proof of identity to apply for its replacement after all its been a good enough proof of identity for the last 10 years. mines due for renewal in february

Good enough for I.D for any purposes EXCEPT to tell the people who issued it who you are. Now DVLA and the Passport Office know my N.I number and I can't see why they need to. All this cross-linking is far too Big Brother for me.

paulus 26
The other thing is the photo license is invalided without its paper bit, begs the question what was the point in changing from the original paper license other that monetary gain
walshie 2,804
Every county I've ever hired a car (except U.K) has never wanted to see the paper bit as they don't know what it is.
