rob190364 2,594
The bag must have been that big he is struggling carrying it back. Hope he's not buried under a mountain of rabbits. Has anybody got his number to check he's ok and not trapped under an avalanche of coneys. I bloody wish!!! didn't get out til the afternoon....and was busy all day today so only just logged on here. I won't say it was a bad day because when you're out it's all good no matter what IMO.....but it came close to being a bad day, I must admit! Good start first off, both jills had kicked, struggled and kicked off like I was strapping a stick of dynamite to their necks the first time I put collars on them but this time they both just let me put them on, no messing. And that's almost where my successes ended! Basically, checked the first warren I had in mind, probably about 5 or 6 holer at the base of a hedge and weirdly three of the holes had been dug out, I don't mean by a person, it was almost like a dog had dug them out, and a big dog at that? each one dug into by about 2 or 3 feet....not sure, but wasn't showing a positive mark anyway. Went to the next warren that almost always holds 2 or 3, stop nets in position, dog waiting on the side of the hedge where there were no nets, me on the other side near the nets......both ferrets entered, straight down, couple of minutes later a rabbit silently slipped out of a hole on my side and casually hopped round the net I shout the dog in whispering fashion and the rabbit sprints dog comes through but doesn't see it, then picks up the scent and runs off hound style nose to ground but is miles too late, rabbit well in the distance. Oh well, ferrets out, nets gathered, off I toddle. Checked two more warrens and nothing at home, walk across three fields to where I know there are a few productive warrens, first three checked, absolutely nothing. Check another that is virtually always empty and something's home, bonus, two holer so I set up the stop nets on either side of the hedge and get ready for an easy bolt....or so I thought. One ferret down, and nothing for about 5 minutes...weird for a two holer?? so I'm thinking it must be a big loop and rabbit is giving ferret the run around, checked with finder and ferret is still moving. So down with the other ferret and 10 minute pass..nothing. Check with the finder and they're both stationary bloody miles away from the entrances, well, when I say miles it must have been about 5 meters, suprised me as the two entrances are literally 1 meter apart. Mark is about 5 foot down, b*****d!!!! I hate digging!!! but off I go, I didn't realise how mild it was yesterday until I started digging, it was pouring off me! and typically it's the only day all season that I left my flask of tea in the car :censored: Just before I get to them one of the ferrets starts moving and reappears at the entrance, back in the box. Break through and there's the other, but no sign of a bunny. So I put that one back and stick my arm now, nowt. Out with the other ferret and down the hole I'd dug to see if I could work out which way it was, she goes straight to it and drags it to the hole, crackin! So one dispatched and hole filled in. Another four warrens checked, nothing at all home...not looking too promising! starting to go dark now so I just thought I'd try one final warren, forget the nets this time, out with the camera and lets try and get a clip of a run he thinks. Why do the b*****d things always bolt on the other side of the hedge when you get a camera out, it's almost guaranteed to happen!! Me and dog on the side that they ALWAYS bolt, and one bolts out of the other side and shoots straight back in, dog shoots through the hedge just as one bolts on my side :censored: :censored: Then nothing for 10 mins, so I put the camera away. At this stage I've given up and sit on a log watching some young totty putting her horse away on the neighbouring land. Just as she's locking the shed out shoots a rabbit on Tilly is on it, straight across a heavily ploughed section of the field and in the direction of the girls field, noooo! rabbit bolts under the barbed wire and Tilly straight under after it, no chance of calling her off something when she's right on its arse. Both go racing past the girl who's just stood there, they're heading towards her house, FFS!!!! 5 seconds later back trots Tilly rabbit in mouth, I'm half expecting the bird to start bleating or raging or something, but she just carries on locking up and goes in as if nothing has happened, phew! And that was that, two rabbits, one dug and one caught by dog. Quote Link to post
