pip1968 2,490
we dont turn the lamp off on hedges as the rabbits sometimes runs inside them and the dog can still make a catch Quote Link to post

mrspinguu 35
Ok. Ill on to that right away. Have plenty of her favourite treats so like you say back to basics. It's soppin wet out anyway so gives me something to do whilst she can't run. Thanks Quote Link to post
Rake aboot 4,935
Recall work. Try and find an alleyway, or suchlike so that the dog is almost forced to come straight back to you with no deviation. For initial recall, a long traning lead will help as well. for the first time, I have started using a whistle to recall my lurchers as well. I`ll see how that goes but as they are out with the spaniel a fair bit, they seem to be getting the gist of it. Calling "COME" with outstreched arms entices the dog in, and plenty reward when they get it right. Quote Link to post
Taz-n-Lily 62
Good thread, and some good answers. I was told in no uncertain terms by an ex-gamekeeper friend that "your fecking dog already knows how to chase feckin rabbits. You need to work on his feckin recall". I use a whistle (I may call him as well, but softly) because "it's feckin undignified to be shouting out his feckin name all over the place". I've worked on his recall in the same field for two or more months, just a little every day. He's now at the point where, unless he's chasing, he'll come straight in, with only the odd lapse. Next will be lying and staying - he lies on hand command, but doesn't like me moving away from him - to whistle only. We'll do some retrieve work, but only when recall and stay to whistle are perfect. He's been a good lad this week so we're going bushing this morning when it's a bit lighter. Quote Link to post
pip1968 2,490
ive now got my new pup which is 7mths old coming straight back on the lamp by standing still and switching the lamp on 2 or 3 times faceing the floor, but in the day time he just returns naturaly and was easy to train.now ive got to work on stock breaking 1 Quote Link to post
busher01 5
I have found that dogs that have been started i the day tend to hunt up on the lamp as they do see other rabbit still running around and once they start hunting up you will never stop them Quote Link to post
