kevin-Day 9
I am looking to line up a nice type working whippet x collie stud dog for 2014, a B&T or red fawn dog would be ideal, or tri-coloured, size 21" to 22" Collie whippet, I have read that the first cross don`t take the shape of the whippet ? I read in an old dog breeders book Some years ago now that Pups take 60% of their make up from the mother and only 40% from the father. Well I think this could be right! I used to breed a legy type bull terrier with a short coat black and tan over jack russels around 20 years ago, 2 of the jacks had short legs and a broken coat, and the other 2 jack russels were legy with a broken coat, well all the pups which I breed came out exactly the same type as the mothers, but colour of the father Black and Tan, and a bit harder than the mothers. So if you was to breed a Collie whippet say, it may work out best to use a whippet bitch and a collie dog, not the other way round. Edited January 5, 2013 by kevin-Day Quote Link to post

Gaz_1989 9,539
10% from the breeder? Quote Link to post
Paid 935
Doesn't it have more to do with dominant genes, as in your terrier breeding, black and tan is quite a dominant colouring. Quote Link to post
reddawn 2,173
nae offence pal, but if you spent mare time oot in the field, working dogs, youd soon see that dogs of most shapes an sizes can catch, its hardly rocket science 8 Quote Link to post
chartpolski 23,321
Mate, are you putting that pic in the middle of those "breed standard" pics and diagrams to show us how nice your pup is ? By the way, there is NO breed standard for Lurchers.... and anyone "stacking" a pup like that would indicate, to me, that they are "rosette hunters", rather than "rabbit hunters" ! Cheers. 7 Quote Link to post

I do this with my dogs ! Paid Good point about the dominant black and tan colouring genes as all jack russels have the Black and Tan gene, but the main point I was making was the taking the shape of the mother and not the father =Dam 60% Sire 40% Edited January 4, 2013 by kevin-Day Quote Link to post

This is just a tip for new breeders not old hands, we should all give a helping hand. Edited January 4, 2013 by kevin-Day Quote Link to post
jack68 628
line breeding I have heard this one before it's all going well till you breed a litter of pups that come out deformed and can not catch a bunny in a phone box, then the said experts call that inbreeding why is this,,, Quote Link to post
johnny boy68 11,726
What collie would you use, border or beardie??? No wait a minute you condemned them as poor, you'd use the very best fly ball champion english shepherd dog wouldn't you. 4 Quote Link to post
