Back ferreting after too long a break

Recommended Posts

Well it seems like a lifetime since last season, and today being the second outing of the season we were well excited.

I had checked with the keeper where the game shoot would be in the next couple of days so we could avoid that area, so it was set to be a day around the res for us today. When we arrived first light we parked on the top bank and had a cuppa and a chat before putting on the collars and getting togged up. The dogs were almost as keen as us, thats how excited we were to be getting out again. The other day we just had a couple of hours to teach one of the young uns the ropes but still managed 24, but gave a few to the new age traveller who resides on the land.

Anyway back to today, as the light got better we got a proper shock, the field below the res was flooded, proper flooded, about 8 foot deep and you could see the line where it had been about 6 foot higher. This unfortunately I believe to be the downfall of the rabbits, flooded and even drowned in their burrows.

At least the res had a high bank which was dry, well as dry as you can get under the circumstances so looked promising. We decided today just to set long nets and flood the warrens with ferrets and flush the rabbits, much easier, if you could see where we were ferreting you would understand our prediciment. We dont usually use long nets so were a bit green under the gills but worth a bash.

I took along my camera hoping to get some good pics but unfortunately I was struck down with a proper agonising pain and was a bit under the weather. Too much vodka over the chrimbo hols had given my kidneys a bit of a beating and I was in so much pain I had to call my son to bring me some pain killers.

That was a bit of a set back but you just have to bite your teeth and get on with it but the camera was left in the van. The first set produced half a dozen and the nets were working just how we hoped, the dogs nailed a few and the odd one got away, (breeders for next year) The plan was to do as much as possible on here thinking it would take all day as usual but its just amazing how much quicker it was using the long nets. The amazing thing is we had some really good bolters considering the weather, we find that in such wet weather they are a bit reluctant and stay below and need digging. We did have a few digs, it just wouldn't be the same without now would it.

As we reached the heavy brambles, you may have seen pics of this before, they are 6-7 foot high we were considering leaving it but thought what the f*ck get it done. Its a good job we did, it was like hitting the jackpot on a gaming machine, but brown furry things instead of silver dollars. We could see the rabbits sneaking out of the holes and sitting tight, even some of the ferrets walked straight past them they just never moved until we started shouting to flush them.

We had such an enjoyable day and we will defo be using the nets again and we have some areas that will be ideal for them.

The res got completed in half the time as normal and with me in agony we decided to call it a day, afterall they had to get back for some booze as they kept telling me, yep I am on the waggon..... for a while, at least until the pain has gone but they just had to rub it in.

We were happy with the result and a respectable 41 rabbits in the van so not a bad day really, can't wait for next week now.
