Anyone know of a good gun dog training book I've a lab she's no just over a year got her to retrieve dummy's land and water and noise trained even had her out on weekend were she retrieved her first shot piddy but just need a bit of help in heel work of Lead she does walk to heel but get destracked easly

As the title sugests it's a step by step book which is easy to follow. Most decent libraries will

have a copy, failing that you can pick up a copy up cheap enough.

just a tip with the heeling bud , try making the heeling mean something to the dog and not just an exercise that stands on its own, i use heeling as a prelude to something exciting happening for the dog, it changes how the dog perceives the exercise,

 

you'll get a quicker response from the dog if the exercise is chained with an exercise the dog really likes

 

before launching a dummy for the dog make it heel, that way the focus will be completely on you and the potential for excitement in the following exercise , give the command, get a really good heel from the dog what will follow then is the dog anticipating you launching the dummy that way you can encourage a better performance from the dog, the potential for energy in an exercise is what keeps the dog focused, the heeling is not the end of anything in the dog mind its just the beginning of excitement for the dog

Thanks for that , got the book £6 waiting delivery .is there a diferance in different working lines of lab just that some one said to me the bitch I ave is from strong field trial work and not good

I know me and Casso have a good verbal spar on here,but to be fair he`s touched on a very good point on this one ! ( the dog will focus on you in a exciting situation when you become the release mechanism )

 

This is why i start the training process at 8 weeks ( non formal ) ball or sock, thus to enable a dog to get that early focus on you.

Sounds like you need to tighten up that lead training/heel work up as well,make yourself the centre of attraction. when you think the dog is being distracted, try turning the dog in the opposite direction encouraging the dog to follow you.

BUT

One problem that you can encounter with a dogs total focus on you, is that the dog walks to heel perfect, - dummy launcher is fired, dog marks the fall of the dummy, but then returns his focus on you,hence losing the mark of the fall.

It`s a fine balance which may not be important for what you require,but it`s absolutely essential in my application.

My dog 16month's old does a similar thing,when I take her out in a local wood she will retrieve a dummy fine with launcher & whistle etc quite well but when on a shoot she gets all excited & will not sit & wait for an order hopefully she will grow out of this with a bit more training on pigeons etc
