Whippets fit for purpose.

Recommended Posts

Hi all was reading today an article in countrymans weekly about size matters in Whippets, that the larger they become they loose there ability to turn as sharp as a smaller more compact whippet, with the trend at the moment I have noticed some really large whippets appearing at some country shows and racing meetings, up to 24"tts I've seen, is the whippet losing its fit for purpose status and with the hunting laws as they are is size that important now.

Just thought it would be interesting to hear the views of the hunting fraternities on the size matters subject.

Just to add my view I prefer the small compact whippet, racey looking and agile as I think they were meant to be like this for hunting. Just my opinion.

Regards Bryan

yep very large whippets knocking about these days however this is just my opinion but whippets should vary from 16" small bitch to 21"for larger dogs but everyone has a different opinion however anything over 22" i would class as a lurcher because there is likely to be something else in it and i would rather have a lurcher this size than a whippet my friend has an older whippet who is 10 now and he is from laguna lines and he is 20".

I think under old whippet hare coursing rules maximum height was 20"

When i was racing whippets in the70s early 80s most dogs were dual purpose, racing and coursing the yardstick then was not height but weight most dogs around the 32lb mark were cabable of taking hare, rabbit ect as for turning faster dont think so, 16lb dogs were never as quick as a 32lb dog they were the racing weights in those days YIS KIC
