bshadle 5
Not here to defend PBurns' opinions. If he wants, he can do that himself. I agree with Nikey, don't know what his occupation has to do with anything. Here's his recent professional bio: Patrick Burns is the Director of Communications at Taxpayers Against Fraud where he works on False Claims Act issues. He is a graduate of Oberlin College and Georgetown University where he received his Masters in demography. Mr. Burns has spent 24 years in the nonprofit arena, as was formerly Director of Communications for the National Council of Senior Citizens where he was a frequently quoted expert on Medicare and prescription drug issues. Mr. Burns has appeared on The Today Show, Good Morning America, The Newshour, Crossfire, C-Span and many other radio and TV shows, as well as authored scores of editorials in newspapers across the U.S. Don't see anything there that would make me quiver in fright. When it comes to hunting with terriers he seems to know his stuff. I bought his book when I couldn't find anyone nearby to show me the ropes and it was helpful in getting me started. Never hunted with him, but would like to some time. He's only about 2 - 3 hours from here and is out every weekend year round. Some of his writing comes across as somewhat pedantic and condescending (Sorry Pat, truth's the truth) but I have met him face-to-face and he's a knowledgable, friendly guy. (Not to say I'm all that great a character reference. ) Those I know who have hunted with him say he's a good one to hunt with. I read his blog pretty regularly. He has a lot of opinions. Some I agree with, some I don't, some I don't know enough about to do either. The tests that started this are one of those things I know nothing about. The ones I disagree with I simply ignore. Everyone's entitled to be FoS sometimes. Just a free opinion and well worth the price. Quote Link to post

Guest pip
As long as he s not a turd pusher i could nt care less about him hounding my ass the reason i posted this topic is because he just took a cheap and uneducated ,untrue swipe at working trials in Ireland ,which no longer take place, these trials where held by some of the most respected dogmen in Ireland and legendary dogs took part, they are a part of the fabric of Irish dogsport and a lot of people on here either took part or had family members participate and where reared on stories of the trials and dogs which took part. The most insulting part of Burns blog is its untrue, and although he bound to know this by now he still leaves it on his web page and allows those who aren t aware of the facts to believe that these where mickey mouse events. These events where attended by hundreds at times and cruelty had no place as association rule stated that anyone causing unneccessary cruelty to the animals where banned from taking part for life,no small punishment for those involved.Burns can tsee past his own world, dogs where tested for gameness not hunting for pest control, which is what we ve all resorted to nowadays.People are afraid to mention sport. Well honestly it makes no odds to me whether or not wild animals kill all the farm animals in the world,i hunt to test the dog, pest control if required is a bonus to the farmer but for me personally i hunt for my own pleasure,no apologies. Guest pip
For a truely educated rundown on the trials in Ireland up until the early 80s maybe jellybean could give some details of the events and terminology that BOOTs mentioned. Quote Link to post

Guest WILF
No matter what folks opinion of Burns is and I have stated mine, I think BSHANDLES post added a modicum of common sense to this thread.........I am sure that some people would have a similar opinion of some "famous" terriermen who have and do put pen to paper in this country.........it takes some man not to get rapped up in his own bullshit Quote Link to post

Guest pip
Thanks to an American friend i just read Burns new blog today ,obviosely he s spotted this thead, its worth a read and just proves his ignorance of terrierwork,he reckons im a peeler or anti for defending an Irish tradition which he know nothing about, proved again by his recent reply, may i invite any mod who thinks that my thread was unreasonable or im an anti to delete my membership now,the tradition i defended is long gone but was a fair event and was not cruel, maybe if Burns would get in touch with someone who really attended or took part they could set him straight the dog world is a poorer place without the events which served a purpose, and he seems to think that only strong dogs where involved in the teastas events, his attempt to wind up Irish lads even further by his sarcasim only proves what most i know already think of him, arragant know nothing with a big mouth a shit job and if he comes to Ireland no teeth.
