dog or bitch?

Hello all, thinking of getting a springer for rough shooting and working with my lurcher, but i,m still undecided on wether to get a dog or bitch, any advice would be appreciated also could anyone recomend a book or dvd on basic training?

Hi Slipper, I would simply get a pup the same sex as your lurcher. I prefer dogs just because they don't come into season , not because I think they are harder workers. You can get realy hard going bitch or a soft dog. It's personal choice. If you google spaniel training there are lots of books and dvds out there. Ian Openshaw does a good dvd. Hope this helps.

I've 2 gundogs at the moment though they're not used for this purpose but as far as gundogs go...aren't the dogs a bit more headstrong with bitches being more biddable etc???

 

I do know with my breeds...Wei's and GSP's...dogs are more headstrong

I wish my bitches were biddable and not head strong :L I'm still a strong believer in the breeding of the dog is 1/4 of it and the time you put in is 3/4's regardless of it being a dog or bitch!

+1 for what muddy says, have it the same sex as the lurcher, breeding and training have far more influence than gender in my experience.

your better getting the sex you prefer as the more things you like the more interested you will be.

 

i have always like bitches more just my preference.

 

my friend who has 3 esp and 2 cockers said that there are 3 good dogs in his pack 2 of them are bitches

im a dog man i have 2 bitches both very good in their own right but i just understand dogs better or they understand me? I cant explain it just feel more comfortable around my dogs than i do around bitches. Its probably a hangover from my first wife who is the biggest bitch ive ever known

i have two lab pups dog and bitch .and the dog is taking to the whistle realy well but early days yet and he good with the dummy
