could be a few reasons. does takestrain off the front of their throat.   WUYANG- the collar you are thinking of is a martingale collar. kind of like a choker design for sighthounds. it doesnt choke

like has already been said, it was designed when dogs where encouraged to pull on the lead to build muscle growth in their back legs.   the book was 'of pedigree unknown by phil drabble'.   great

My saluki cross modeling a few collars I have lol I've also got a 1.5 inch strong stuff collar and a 2 inch one they are straight cut ones   Strong stuff lurcher collar   Leather 1 Leather

Probably wrong, but I got told its harder for the dog to pull out of the collar as apposed to a normal collar, something to do with a whippets head not been much wider than its neck, can't remember where I heard this.

Personally I think it's just a traditional thing I can't see any benefit from it but I could be wrong lol maybe gaffer, Rio, strong stuff etc have looked into it more as they make them???

WUYANG- the collar you are thinking of is a martingale collar. kind of like a choker design for sighthounds. it doesnt choke but once pulled it is then tight on the dogs neck and therefore doesnt allow the dog to back out of it.

LURCHER88- id be careful with letting the dog play with sticks. a stick cost me over 600quid and very nearly a dead dog.

just took this to show you a martingale. the collar you are refering to, not a tapered collar as the topic is about

no. i was throwing the stick for her and it stuck in the ground like a javelin. she jumped straight onto it and impaled the back of her throat. it then snapped off so i couldnt see it and i carried on walking them and throwing sticks for her (mental lab x).

the vets on the phone said to leave her til morning but wheb she choked trying to eat i took her straight the emergency vets. she jumped in the car and when i opened the boots to get her out she had passed out in a pool of blood and had to be carried into the vets who performed a life saving operation.

NEVER let them play with sticks or golf balls etc.

i use the tapered for walking my dogs as i like them.

the martingale is just a house collar and was an error by the maker of it as i ordered a non martingale house collar but its fine and is smart.
