mad al 146
I've always gone for a winch and chains myself due to it usually being in the steepest, most slippery place imaginable when a 4X4 needs a tug . Al

spade 224
Are you just thinking about towing on road in case of breakdown. If so a 3tonne job should do. If you were thinking of pulling them out of some upto the axles mud hole then best bet is a winch but if you can't run to that you should get a 12tonne recovery rope. You could also carry a farm jack to use as an emergency winch.
