Buying a Weihrauch

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I've recently become interested in buying a new air rifle (springer). I currently have a Weihrauch HW25 L but feel like moving up somewhat in the power stakes. I've spent a while researching (by the way I definitely want a Weihrauch) but am a bit confused by all the options, models and prices flying around. I will generally use the rifle for plinking and a bit of pest control (mainly crows) and have decided upon a .22 cal. I do prefer break-barrel but could probably be talked into an under-lever, my budget could possibly stretch to £300. The rifle must have open sights and a rail for a scope, I find the opens very handy but have always fancied a scope. My options seem to be:

1. HW99S (Still essentially seems like a junior rifle)

2. HW35 (Not sure if still up to it, could it hold its own against a 95?)

3. HW80 (Seems a bit heavy, some say not as good under the licence limit)

4. HW95 (Know people with them, don't want to copy too much)

Finally, living where I do there aren't many decent gun shops close at hand, the only one being wonderland models in Edinburgh which is pretty expensive. I've found a good website from Exeter/Dorset/Suffolk which is a lot cheaper (nearly £100 on the HW80) but obviously I can't buy from one of their shops, they say that they could send the gun to a registered gun dealer near me, I'm a bit skeptical about that what do you think?

Your opinions on the guns and the shop issue would be greatly valued,

Thanks,

Daniel

Can i please ask why you must have open sights mate?   Sure they are great for fast target acquisition, ratting at very close ranges as well as ferals but you have not mentioned that.   Having ope

You gentlemen here are too kind to me. But to be honest Daniel, you are in very fine company with these good men. Their shooting is as amazing as their knowledge is a force to be reckoned with any day

Personally mate, if you like breakys more, then a hw35,95 or 'll serve you fine, you can pick up good second hand 's for around 150 and if the weight suits you ok then you've a rifle for life, with a

Hello and Welcome,

Pianoman is the Guru on all things spring! no offence to Si or Davy who are also very knowledgable

Most firearms dealers will send to other Registered firearms dealers (RFD) for a price, but you will probably have to pay both RFD and the postage which can get pricey! but it is possible and worth pricing up.

Why are you set on having a break barrel? im not knocking them im just curious

For me the choice would be the 95, its not copying if thats the best rifle you can buy

I have a 97k and I love it... even though its spring powered :bad:

Having open sights you are narrowing your choices by a lot mate.

A good scope will also allow you fast target acquisition (on low mag) and you to shoot targets close (on low mag) and at far distances on a higher mag.

If you are buying a Weihrauch which is one of the best of (I would say 2 brands of springer) the other being Air Arms on the market, you really want to get the best out of it mate which means a scope IMO.

If i was you on your budget I would 100% get a Weihrauch HW95K (without a shadow of doubt). Its a absolute fantastic rifle. Some say too light for their liking, but for me its just perfect and if your used to shooting a HW25 a HW95K is heavier than that so you will be just fine.

Or second hand with scope

If your still hell bent on open sights as well then think about the HW35. have a look at this one which is well in your budget mate

Finally have a think about the HW80 aswell.

Hope this help some.

You gentlemen here are too kind to me. But to be honest Daniel, you are in very fine company with these good men. Their shooting is as amazing as their knowledge is a force to be reckoned with any day. But they are great friends too.

Right then, in light of answers so far, your choices of rifle are sound.

I must agree with Si here that the HW95 is a logical step up from your HW25. It is a beautifully weighted rifle with a very nice handling stock. Add a scope to it and you have all the accuracy you'd want from your shooting developement with it. I can appreciate your desire for open sights, that's where I learned my shooting from as a youngster, but had scopes been more affordable and plentiful as they are now, I wouldn't have wasted a second getting one for my rifle. This is definately one you should look at.

The HW35 is probably your ideal rifle in all your stated requirements. It's an open-sights, extremely accurate hunting and target air rifle with scoperail provision and one you will grow and develope your skills with very well. And, as with all Weihrauch rifles, it will last you a whole lifetime if you look after it well.

But if you want to get serious with your hunting, you would be well advised to use a scope on your rifle and learn the skills of using it. They will give you the most rewarding shooting of all, I think.

Best wishes with your choice.

Thank you very much, a lot of very helpful suggestions here, I've got a bit of time to think about it so there's no panic. I've always used break-barrel rifles but have nothing against underlevers, just been used to break-barrel.

Again, like with break-barrel I've always been used to open sights. I find them quick and easy to use without much faffing around. I've always had the (perhaps wrong) idea that scopes are slower and a bit of a pain to set up and overkill for just plinking. I definitely could be wrong though.

The 95 is a very good rifle, I know that but taking everybody's suggestions I think I'll either buy the HW35 if I go to the shop or have the HW80 delivered.

Thanks again, the replies and suggestions are very much appreciated,

Don't be too afraid of the HW80 mind. I've had a HW95 and found it very hold fussy, good for teaching consistent technique but made for some frustrating misses. A good friend recently bought a HW80 .22 with scope for £300 and it has impressed me no end. Just enough extra weight to cancel out the 'wavy' tendancy of the 95 and his was super smooth (most likely tuned as most out of the box HW's these days are rough and twangy in my experience).

Underlever?

TX200 of course.

Not tried a HW35 but they have a longstanding and fearsome reputation.

Good luck, if you're like me then this is the beginning of a severe and bankrupting addiction that'll see you trading your way through gun after gun as you fulfill the need to try em all!

Its great!

Personally mate, if you like breakys more, then a hw35,95 or 80'll serve you fine, you can pick up good second hand 80's for around 150 and if the weight suits you ok then you've a rifle for life, with a half decent scope you shouldn't have to pay more than 250 for the entire set up.

best thing is to get yourself to a club or shop where you can shoulder all of them and see which suits you best. Theres no real difference accuracy wise between any of them really.

Cheers, wurz
