Hi all,

This time last year i was walking to the shops when this little black and tan bolt of lightning ran past me followed closely by a portly gent shouting all the obscenities in the world at it. Having realised that i wasnt going to be able to catch it and he sure as hell wasnt he stopped by me and looked like he was about to die, i asked

"you ok"

and he eventually replied with

"that dogs taking the piss out of me, keeps running round the block, hes off to the effing pound tomoz"

having heard this i burst out laughing and asked him why he hadnt just waited for the dog to come back round? he looked at me with a puzzled look and said

"if you can catch him, you can have him if you want, im fed up with the fecker"

and with that he walked off into his house. I decided that i had nothing better to do and that it might be fun, so i waited for a few inutes and sure enough along came the dog at a steady jog, all i did was sit on the floor, got a packet of sports mixture out and held one in my palm. I could tell he wasnt sure at first but after a bit of encouragent he came round and while his teeth were stuck together i scooped him off and went back home.

That evening i managed to get him to sit and get on his bed through using the basic techniques my dad taught me, and the next moring i walked the dog back to the blokes house to see if he had calmed down a bit. after knocking on the door he opened the door and explained that he still didnt want the dog, he even handed me the docs for all the jabs he had, a bed for him, and the rest of his food......result.

At the time i wasnt able to keep him on a permanant basis due to me going on tour, but after spending a month or so teaching him to drop, leave, lie down and stay to go with his previous training i took him to see my mum, who instanly fell in love with Dodge (figured it was a good name as he just about dodged the pound). She agreed to keep him and has been there since.

Over this time though he has killed a few rats when out on walks etc, will chase anything, has made friends with a family of staffies that live near me mum and has killed a cat (my mum was traumatised until the farmer who owns the land he gets walked on told her carer that it was a feral cat and he didnt mind).

Wth this in mind and me now preparing to leave the army i was wondering wether he could be anygood as a worker? now i realise that 18 month is old to try and start them working but i would rather try and teach him before getting a fresh pup.

So having made you read through this extremely long essay i would like to finish by asking if any of you have any book i could buy off you to help with this training? or offer any tips?

Thanks for taking the time to read this :)

Tony, the dog sounds a right little charactor and a cross I've bred many times for work,he's just the right age for starting off,try and find a few lads in your own area, maybe the lad that bred him or ask the fella you got him off if the parents worked, try and get a few days out with them, most terrier books will point you in the right direction, start with a few rats and rabbits, bushing and work your way up,get him out as much as you can though as he won't learn nothing in the house, there's plenty of posts and threads on here and other sites that will get you up and running, well done for giving the dog a chance,WM

Perfect age for starting working... Like has already been said start him to rats and go from there... Plenty of threads on here so do a search and see what takes your fancy... Beg steal or borrow a book or 2 on working terriers

i will dig around my house and see if i can find where i put my collection of ratting and digging dvds.
