Rich.h 4
if my 7month russell x patt dont get out half the kennel is chewed lol................ cheaper to give them a walk........lol i take mine out for a couple of hours off the lead walking and she still doesnt want to go back in the kennels.....they mature fast and i think people forget there not like running dogs ,...........there alot more hard waring and will run or hunt for hours...........at 7- 8 months ,..........there not working as such ,....just pushing a few rabbits out................energy to burn Sounds more like the dog is bored sensless. Simply walking it to the point if later life injuries wont fix that. Quote Link to post

johnny 777 53
The reasons for chewing the kennel is not because of boredom or lack of exercise I think it's just being a pup Quote Link to post
oxo 452
I agree with Peter that is far too much. At the age of nine months I will start hard ground walking and gradually build it up so by the time they are 12mths, they will be doing 3miles per day. They bone structure is not developed at 5mths and this may cause more problems later at 5mths pups generally need more rest than exercise ATB John A five month old terrier is a lot more developed than a bigger dog, mine looks pretty much like. an adult now. A walk around the block at 12 months is not much, some dogs are working hard by that age. . How do they develop quicker than a bigger dog? Did not say anything about work, talking about exercise my dogs work for the 6mths. Exercise is completely different thing all together So you only let a dog walk 3 mile if its a year old but they are worked from 6 month, you carrying them everywhere? your dogs not exercised during work? What are they doing? What bone damage in later life, any examples? I think a typical 5 month old terrier is a lot more developed than a large lurcher of the same age, physically and mentally. Each to their own. Quote Link to post

I start them ratting at 6mths etc...as well as running them off the lead retrieving a ball but only light exercise , at 9mrh i start hard ground walking them obvisiously diet plays a big part to strengthen them up. too much exercise at a early age will almost cause arthritis a lot sooner in later life. IMO a 5mth terrier and a 5mth lurcher is the same not developed. ATB Quote Link to post
GOBSHITE 107
Two pages of utter shite. I've kept a top line of working terriers for twenty odd years and i've had working terriers for the last twenty nine. In all that time i've never given my dogs anymore than a walk around a few feilds behind my house every morning and thats so they can empty out instead of shitting all over my yard. Just what are you doing with these super dogs ? Come summer i'll take them a walk around the block but thats just to settle them down mentaly, come the end of the season they have nothing to keep their heads straight so they will start to fight, not all the time just every now and again.
