jakk 6
What would the main difference between a collie x greyhound and a collie x saluki. I'm looking for a dog that will turn hare but not be fast enough to catch it? What i want to do is entirely legal but not something i would like to disclose on a open forum. Quote Link to post

thefensarefarbutistillgo 2,482
Fast enough to turn it but not fast enough to catch it ? What a backward question, just get a saluki x greyhound and put a muzzle on it, then you've got what your after, what are u thinking of doing ? Quote Link to post
jakk 6
I want to use a lurcher to keep a hare moving for a falcon to pursue. Its quite a hard branch of falconry to get right however due to the complexity of the situation once youve caught the hare and you have two wound up apex predators vying for the hare they have worked hard to catch and both creatures could get jealous especially considering jthe falcon will have hold of the hare and the dog will have to wait for any reward. I'm hoping the collie brain power will give me a dog that grasps the situation fast as ultimately the dog is a secondahry factor in the sport. Quote Link to post
reddawn 2,173
ye want a dog way less drive pal, a lurcher will want the kill an will feel cheated, even the dumb uns aint that dumb, get yaself a leggy collie, most hares i see ehre whlile walking the collies look as tho they enjoy being chased about, an the collies love the excersoze, stick a lurcher up there arse an its diffrent, they throo a hedge an gone, heading for the nearest block a forrestry.. maybe even 3/4 collie 1/4 grey would be better, butit would have to be steady Quote Link to post
Mixed Bag 603
why not use a springer or some other type of gundog to flush hares for the falcon think that would work better then you can stop the dog once the chase begins? 1 Quote Link to post
kranky 507
Unless you've got permission on a load of Arabian desert this isn't going to work. Just put the hare up yourself, once the falcons got some height. Putting a dog in the mix on even the biggest fields in this country is a recipe for disaster. Quote Link to post

Without a dog the hare flushes nearly always in a straight line the hare runs at half speed, the falcon gains height, stoops, hits the hare in the head, game over personally its the sporting equvilent of watching paint dry Quote Link to post
chartpolski 24,166
There's one or two on here use saluki's and falcons for hare. Paul Sagar, (sadly deceased), used to do it; and I think Cocker has some experience of it. Surely it's all about training the dog, whatever cross, to work WITH the falcon ?? Cheers. kranky 507
Well then I'd suggest you get a Musket and a licence for blackbirds or buy a Gos and fly it from the fist. Whilst I understand what you're trying to do, it won't work here. The hares that are run by the Arab guys with Salukis and Gyrs are in an open desert with hundreds of yards between small pieces of sparse cover. If you've ever seen a dog run a hare you'll understand why your plan won't work. There's no collie blood in the salukis in the desert and they know their place is lower than the birds, even when there's 5 or 6 of them. Quote Link to post

I think like any animal its about rules and routines. I think if you can create respect from the dog then it is workable. I have a friend who worked salukis with his fal con with great success and he said he thinks salukis are naturally respectful of falcons (they are the only dogs the arabs dont dislike) I know someone else who did this in very enclosed countryside with success too but it was by fault then intention he started doing it. I came on here because you guys know dogs better then falconers Quote Link to post

Very enclosed countryside isn't the best place to run a hare or fly a falcon, you'd never get the best out of either. Quote Link to post
