how many dogs

Recommended Posts

Well we have 7 dogs here , my red salukiX 1 has been retired for some years now due to injuries, at 10 year he still gets out with the rest for walks and still has the knack to be in the right place to make the odd catch. My black and white SalukiX is also retired from serious work now due to injuries, the two scruffy lurchers are my o/h's abd she work them if she comes out, that leaves me with my two 3 year old Salukis currently working and a 10 month old saluki pup the result of an accidental coupling between my Salukis, all our dogs live in the house will stay for the entirety of their lives not just the working lives.

.

I love nothing more than having a wander with them all, retiree's included and watching them all work some taking on role as busher others waiting on , all have proved themselve more than able singlehanded. I have no issue with taking a group out with me ferreting or on a moonlight mooch. Many might think it unsporting as they see it as less chance of the quarry escaping but to be honest when I'm out for rabbits I out the get as many as I possibly can. Another way to look at it, how many folk shoot with open sights rather than with telescopic to be more sporting?

I entirely agree that use one dog is by far the most rewarding way to work them, however when injury strikes it has you crawling up the walls not being able to go out.

I'm not sure if it's my pics of my dogs catching rabbits as a pack that has prompted the discussion. Either way it's good topic and I look forward to reading other peoples veiws.

Me and my mate ran outta Sighthounds last year,...we had my bitch break her neck, then her tail (had to be amputated) then she broke the 4" stump that she had left!...couple that with being bitten buy a snake, and she hardly seen any game last season...so that left my male (who thankfully would put Jesus to shame in the healing department!) and the wifes bitch...

I probably have the work for atleast one other Staghound, but when i start making regular trips to OK and KS, im probably gonna want another two...that way i can have a brace of dogs each side of the truck for coyotes, and one spare dog incase of injury.

me my self the most running dogs i have had is four.

three got injured that season and was stuck with a very good deerhound cross bitch

bitch that never got injured and she came into heat.

all the lurchers where used for lamping digging and coursing.

and i found it was hard to keep them with no injurys and all working.

when i was more into coursing and alit more hares to run.

i tought it was better to have three hare dogs rather than have

one as better to rotate them rather than over run one.

have three lurcher pups at this time with a bit of luck

two will make decent alrounders.

there are some lads that play the numbers game with dogs.

and have to say the ones they keep are usually fairly good.

as long as the dogs are looked after best of luck in my opinion.

all the best

well said "snoopdog" lets keep it sensible , at the end of the day if a dogman / woman can cope with a pack of lurchers lets hear how , coz the chances are if we all keep an open mind we just might learn something new that has not been printed in a book

LABLAD....i do have 6 dogs well bitches , but i stated their ages , so this season i only have 3 to be worked and 2 of em are entering their first coursing season so they wont be run too hard , as im not irresponsible and dont want to spoil all the hard work i have already put into them,

i have high hopes for 1 young bitch but the others might not make the grade for me .....anyway come monday im down to 4 as i have given 2 pups to friends of mine , so its not like i have got 6 dogs all the time , i also said people keep giving me pups

Now i have my 2 original lurchers one saluki grey cattle dog grey, and my beddy grey, i`m keeping 2 pups back out of that and i wouldnt be doing so if i didnt think they would get worked hard i am a believer of only owning a lurcher if they get worked full time none of this part time shit...Next season 2008 i will be out lamping 5 days a week easily no worries at all :clapping:

well i have 3 to work this season and a pup for next season but if these were the only dogs available to me i'd be having a quiet season compared to some of my previous ones, but luckily i have mates that have some tidy dogs for back up or to share the work load even.

the only quarry i run (pre ban of course) are foxes and the odd deer if i'm having a quiet night, and i know if i was to go out as often as i do (or would like to) with just 3 dogs available i could sicken them in no time, but that would be very stupid imo, dogs can only be pushed so far, what ever the dog, they all have a breaking point but its up to us not to push them that far, although in the past i have and it has always ended in failure.

ideally i prefer to have 4 guaranteed and well tested fox dogs in my kennels but because of the massive work load they incure throughout the season i rarely finnish the season with more than 2.

imo if we all went out with the dogs has much as we'd like to then 1 dog could never be enough
