jigsaw 11,863
went out to feed the jills rearing young this morning before I went to work.As I was feeding them I thought the nest was a little too quiet for my liking. While the jill was feeding I took a look and all I saw was a half eaten kit. They would have been 5 weeks tommorow and am flummoxed as to why she ate the 3 kits. Its a shame really as the jill is very good at her job.I was hoping to keep 1 kit and had 1 other promised so far, aint life a bitch Quote Link to post

gaz 284
Jigsaw, i might be wrong here as im only having a stab in the dark here. What about yer dogs bud (if you have dogs that is ?) do they have a free run in your yard ? im not saying they were being aggresive towards your ferrets in the hutches, but mabye just being curious with young in the hutch and might have made your jill edgey and led her to do this ? Anyway sorry to hear this bud as its usually owners who want to meddle with the kits to soon that sparks this off with the jill but this said sometimes you think you know and understand your animals and then thing like this happens, leaving you scratching at your head again Quote Link to post
Greenrodders 0
Could it have been a cat, a magpie or another predator spooking the jill Also, more worryingly, could someone have been interfering with them without your knowledge? Alternatively, sometimes animal mothers know when there is a health problem with their litter. Eating the young is nature's way in the wild, f recycling the energy and protein invested in the young ones, ready to try again very sad news. Quote Link to post
jigsaw 11,863
Gaz all the dogs are on the other side of the yard.Plus the cages are 5 feet off the ground. Not a hope of anyone getting near them,3 gates to get through and the dogs are mental if a stranger walks in on their own. What the hell, just 1 of those things,we wont get too worked up over it.Irish lurcher yer a messer boy Good show on 22cd of July IL in Adaire for all catagories, you going,I'll be there, aint that a good reason to be there.
