I remember watching Fools and Horses and couldn't get my head around why they called a watch "kettle" and I had it explained to me that it dates back to the days of "Fob watches"................Kettle and hob = Fob

It dates back to the days when folk left thier valuables in a kettle (literally/presumably safe by dint of being too obvious) and so though a fob watch may well have been found in there...so to would other valuables (jewellery) and so the term "had a kettle" was born from the thief takers of the day(The thieves Opera by Lucy Moore). "Kettle and Hob" slang is a lot later.
