Didn't Plummer right that his Merle had a short neck, which meant that brain impulses got to the dogs feet faster. Hence a short neck= faster dog. Mendelssohn's law of independent segregation and all that?!

I have a book in the house written by plummer that i have never read. Reckon if thats an example of the kind on stuff thats in it it will stay on the shelf.

I'll be okay then. Just need to respray my dogs ears red and then maybe they will catch a rosette.

Just out of interest anyone work a full collie ? ferreting mooching ect

 

I do, for mooching. Not as fast as a lurcher, obviously. But good nose, works under close control or on his own wide ranging. He also works sheep and pigs.

 

My favourite way to use him is to send him out to the top of a piece of ground to be worked, then have him bring the ground in towards the lurchers at the bottom end . No big hauls but makes for some good sport.

 

The way the current climate against hunting with running dogs is going, I think that for those of us that prefer to keep under the radar would be better served with "hunting collies" rather than out and out speedsters. If that makes any sense?

Is it a coincidence that the original lurcher concept,a dog that would go unnoticed,slip below the radar and yet still feed an hungry family or the drovers that used them as a multi-purpose jukel,is now,because of the ban,making a comeback.Centuries of injustice and we are basically still talking about the same dog.

I think your bang on the mark Morton..I can take my ugly cur x and the house pet a Pomeranian x and go ANYWHERE without a second glance..the wee dog hunts like feck too which helps,pink collar on and one of them leashes that old folk use that extend and when we hit the fields we are good to go haha...

A certain type of lurcher,when only the best were utilised and bred from,that carried the breed for nearly 2 centuries before all the fads and fancys of the recent past,its no bad thing.Trouble is now the term lurcher is beyond the concept of a lot of owners and the ability of their mutts.

Definitely not Jack..I really like the look of Twist,I personally think you are in for some great fun with him?..i know cur types ain't for everyone but they and I seem to do ok so I will always have one to heel as long as I'm of able health to look after one..
