yeah baw not to many caught in icemans comp but they only first season dogs most iv ever got was 3 in the one day and that was along time ago my old barney dog best i had

The most ive seen killed by one dog in the daytime is 3. And that takes some doing. I used to run hares on the lamp most of the time but seeing as i now have loads of permission and better dogs id rather save them for the daytime. Even my bull cross can kill them on the lamp ...

Depends how far you want to go back, there is some good sal blood in the country these days and has been for years but when i were young the best day time Hare dogs around my way were DH/GH X GH, the only sal blood we could use was show stuff which add,d nothing. I,v had my dog of a lifetime and that was a DH cross, its all down hill from now buster.

some hares on the lamp are easy for the dogs in certain places ,i know some places where its very good to bring pups on and would only run pups there ,but i also know where there are places are that even on the lamp will give your dog a good test and not your quick run ,but a run that can and does last for 3 or 4 mins

Lamping hares is no sport. I've done it myself like everyone who has lamped but that was when I was young and didn't know better. Take the tales of 5/5 dogs with a heavy doze of salt. Yes a dog will have an exceptional day but there isn't many will do it in January. Look at the competition on icemans thread, that gives a true reflection of numbers caught. Dogs making it through to latter stages with a single hare caught. Even the mighty bag chaser Kat of Bricks when he beat miles saluki on the fens only got 2 to the fens dogs 1. If I got 1 I was happy, 2, I was over the moon. Never was into numbers, much prefered watching the dog chase. Only wanted it to catch for the dogs sake more than anything. Still had days when I got 3/3 but it wasn't often.

Chid,lamping hares was NEVER illegal here in England or Wales before the ban not so sure about the Scots though? I only ever kept lamp dogs and I was in the game not just for the enjoyment but also the dollar...killed thousands on the lamp and don't give a flying f**k what anyone says lol..I loved it,more the f*****g merrier!!

Under the Hares Act 1848 and Hares (Scotland) Act 1848 it is an offence for 'anyone to use any firearm or gun of any description at night for the purpose of killing game'. This is an additional offence to night poaching where game is being shot during the night, which begins one hour after sunset to one hour before sunrise. The Ground Game Act (as amended) and The Agricultural (Scotland) Act 1948 appear to override the prohibition on night shooting of hares by occupiers or persons authorised under the Acts.

 

 

No person should be authorised by the occupier to kill ground game except:

a) Members of his household resident on the land in his occupation

Persons in his ordinary service on such land e.g. employees

c) Any other person, bona fide employed by him for reward in taking and destruction of ground game. The keeping of ground game satisfies the requirements of reward in the absence of money.

Every person so authorised by the occupier, on demand by any other person having a concurrent right or any person so authorised by him in writing, must produce their written authority. In default, a person would not be deemed to be an ‘authorised person’.

Never rearly did much lamping for Hares, never needed too TBH, only time i went out at night for Hares was the first night of the snow, and that was to fill the freezer when we, as we were coal miners, were on strike, which in the 70s and 80s seem'd to be often, it aint sport but it filled your bellies,que the music from the Hovis advert buster. What makes hares so easy on the lamp to catch do they turn into slugs at dusk?

 

Some coursing dogs havnt a hope in hell of catching hares on the lamp, not enough time to "box" them or there such bad strikers and carnt run them to death

 

Why do hares deserve more respect than rabbit, fox, deer? because people match coursing dogs on them big deal.
