auto culto 0
I've got a big ex-military gen+ scope and a triple cascade gen 1+ monocular. And you ask what i use? The fancy bit of kit i use is called a lamp Don't get me wrong the NV kit is outstanding but its a bugger to judge distance and the modern stuff need loads of infra red light throwing into the field to become usable. If your totally static shooting then that's fine but believe me you will more time looking through the scope and getting now where as they ain't that practical and comfy. The best method Ive found is to use a NV monocular with a wide field of view to spot targets and break down the range then use a gun mounted lamp to finish the job :gun smilie: ive enclosed a pic from my ben 2+ which is targeted on a moving car at aprox 2000 yards, the pic doesnt do the scope justice as its much better in the flesh but i still choose to use a lamp. Sometimes its much better to use basic kit. Quote Link to post
martin 332
If you use a monocular nv,would you be able to see a rabbits eyes in a field,so you could then lamp it as normal.Oh,and do you need ir for the monocular? Quote Link to post
auto culto 0
my monocular is good enough for use without an infra red light source as its basically 3 gen 1 tubes back to back giving it huge light amplification and a very wide field of view. I have tried other gen 1 stuff but to be honest i would waste your money on them as there really crap and you will only be able to see as far as the distance of the infra red light. The lamps supplied are poor at best one would only give you 40yard vision max but it does reflect off eyes at far greater distances like a normal torch does, but you still need to id what your shooting at anyway so it makes little difference. Where are you located ? if your fairly close you can pop round and i,ll take you out to try mine so you can compare with other systems. Quote Link to post
BULLRUNNER 7
I thought about getting night vision for my rimmy but unless you have lots of money you'd be better of just getting a lamp and fitting that to the top of your scope. All the stuff around the £200-£400 pound mark isn't worth bothering with. You'd be talking 34 figures for top notch night vision. Is it really worth it? Quote Link to post

That's very kind of you to offer to take me out for a demo'auto culto' I really appreciate it...thanks .I'd find it a bit difficult to get up there at the moment though.Which model have you got and what sort of price was it(if you don't mind me asking).Someone was talking about some sort of gizmo that you fit on the optic lens of a standard scope,do you know anything about these things?....................................Martin. Martin, I use a pilkington kite 2nd gen+ fitted with a yucon infra red illuminator. I use this on a 22 rimfire. I can shoot rabbits out to 80yds the magnification of it is +4 you can get another lense maxi kite which brings it up to +6. I find this brings the sight higher off the barrel, which then changes your sight plane. These sights to buy new ,depending on what tubes you have in them, are about £3500-£4000. I bought mine second hand for £1500. This sight also fits onto my 222 and I can shoot foxes out to 150 yds. The reason why you need an infra red illuminator-if you are looking into your night vision on a dark night animals do not stand out that well in rough covered ground, but with an infra red illuminator the eyes reflect well. Before I had a pilkington I had a 1st gen monocular which was +4 mag, I mounted this on a piece of 1" aluminium tube. Inside the tube I fixed a laser with 4 adjusting screws for windage and elevation through the tube. on the front of the laser I put a piece of infra red filter. 2 1" scope clamps fixed the tube to the gun. I also use an infra red illuminator on the night vision. With this equipment I could shoot rabbits out to 60yd by looking into the monocular, and placing the laser on the rabbit. This monocular equipment cost me approx £300 for the whole set up. I made one up for the Warrener many years ago, and he found it very effective. Quote Link to post
Guest Magwitch
I use a Cobra Merlin with a lightforce lamp as an illuminator it works best on 6x mag, it cost £300 and works rather well, i have shot hundreds of rabbits with it in the last couple of months. Without the lightforce as an illuminator it would only have a range of about 30 yards but with it i can shoot out to about 60-70 yards. hope this helps Quote Link to post
