whippeter69 88
Start on rats mate then let em have a rag on a dead fox. Got a 8 month old patt that when i shoot a fox close to home thats still warm i will fetch the terriers and let her and the older bitch have a good rag, did this for the first time with ehr and she took about 30 seconds to work out what it was then i couldnt get her off the thing. The second fox she had a rag on she didnt hesitate to grab hold of. Both dead after shooting with the rifle. Let them sit outside the earth while another terrier is working and this should do the trick mate. There will be plenty of people on here with advice ! Quote Link to post

night warrior 178
The moor you get it out the better it will become let it watch and learn and at the end let it have a rag on what you got and have a good snif about it will soon come in to its own best of look with it Quote Link to post
the durham digger 127
As above mate, if you possibly can get out with experienced lads and dogs and teather your terrier at a dig when the fox is dispatched allow your young dog a mouthfull. If like me you have a lot of clay pipes in your area, allow an experienced dog to run a pipe first to ensure its empty (remember to net up or stand a gun) then if empty allow the experienced dog to run it again but this time allow your young un to follow just to let it gets head around being underground. At your dogs age if its collared up, run him loose and theres a good chance he might use his nose and find charlie to ground alone. If in the meantime he has had a bit of ratting it gets him used to the idea of a nip on the lip and he will also learn that his prey is underground, but the best thing about rat bashing i think is it teaches a young dog to dig onto his prey. I dont bother much with ratting unless asked to but thats where all my dogs start. Good luck mate, hope you find success! 2 Quote Link to post
