I find it strange how some Akitas seem to make the most aggressive yard/guard dogs about,when's the last time they were bred for any sort of work?

 

Ridgebacks also seem to make good guards sometimes,i was speaking to an old police dog handler who said the best dog he ever had was a ridgeback,if you think about it that breed must have spent more time as a purely show dog and pet than working.

 

any other breed known for this?

im not sure what exactly you cant grasp, akita's are doing just what it say's on the packet they are aggressive and mistrusting by nature , the difference between them and other guarding breeds is that other breeds were originally bred to take instruction in their line of work ,

 

what it breaks down to is that their are a lot of large aggressive breeds out there but most will break down in instinctive patterns when making contact , with bull breeds the mouthing or grasping is paramount , they have a load/unload approach , they were breed to kill on their own , they get loaded up by the sight of whatever quarry and they unload by way of holding pulling tearing and tugging, there is not intervention by man at any point

 

if we look at the normal breeds used in protection , they were not bred to kill on their own , they work out of drive which can elaborate to higher and higher forms of contact to holding baying etc, in many ways they have evolved further in service to man , they have being bred to be in drive whilst still taking instruction , they dont need to break down into the bite which is an instinctive pattern show by other aggressive breeds

 

all behaviour cant be worked on of course to a degree, you can get a race horse to pull a plough im sure but it would be a lot easier for everyone involved and safer to use a shire whose temperament is better suited to the job in hand,

I take it all back, obviously any pet bred guard dog type animal will make for an exceptional worker willing to have a roll with any quarry and able to finish the job quickly and efficiently ...........I have now seen the error of my ways and bow to other folks more enlightened views.

my bessys mum bred dogs and she had a chow that was absolutly mental couldnt walk in the garden if the door was open even when it wasnt hed run at the door n not stop until crash lol and never wear a bb cap lol best dog iv ever seen
