Always respect your opinion Gnasher but imo Leonard didn't dominate Hagler, can't count how many times I've watched that fight and still can't decide who won,a good start and a classy finish from leona

30 years ago......in the Welterweight division.........   Tommy Hearns.......Ray Leonard.......Roberto Duran........Wilfred Benitez.........Don Curry..........   I dont think he would of beat any

Back to Mayweather and I'll finish with this. . Best defensive fighter of our day? Could well be. Is he in the top bracket? Absolutely, but top bracket of today's fighters, the question was how would he get on 20/30 years ago as welterweight. . I know that your defence is relative to what you are defending against. Granted the man chinned our boy Hatton, but he was a weight above his own and hardly a young Roberto Duran! He struggled with a 34 year old De La Hoya, who was hardly a prime Leonard at that point. To say "you can't see why he wouldn't of done so well back then" is the same as saying that Miguel Cotto is as good as Duran. The welterweights back then were a league above Mayweather altogether.

that link was empty tfm,,,, i think the reffs back then used to love a bit of a tear up they seem to let them get on with the fight a bit more than they do today and arnt as quick to stop the fight when some one gets tagged or only just makes the count when been on ther arse its a small bit like when they changed amature boxing from judging to a points system it promoted skillfull fast in and out type boxing rather than fighters and brawlers,, back to the pro i was onlie a kid so chuld be wrong but i think what happend in the watson ben fight had alot to do with how long the reffs whuld let it go on for

My bad, try again mate. I appreciate your point regarding refs, some are bit premature sometimes for sure. Perhaps better safe than sorry though ay.

I'd agree he's in the same league in the skill and speed departments, but as for power, aggression, fitness, durability, will to win. . hmmm. . But there we are, that's my view, it'd be a boring place if we all had the same one!

Its worth keeping in mind Leonard didnt just beat Hagler he completely dominated him......dominated one of the greatest middleweights in history who had cleaned up the entire division and who was a massive favorite to win..................and having been out of the ring 4 years and jumped from welterweight to middleweight to do so.......id say if ever there was a fighter who at his peak was unbeatable......Ray Leonard was very close to it...............personally i dont think Mayweather could of dealt with Leonard or Hearns........infact i think Hearns would of beat him even more convincingly than Leonard would.

I presume you mean Watson/Eubank........the referee that night was Roy Francis one of the best and most respected referees in Britain.......what happened to poor Michael Watson was proven in court to be entirely the fault of the bbboc......not the referee, the corner or anyone else. ;)

I dont either mate.....partly due to the fact that i just dont think todays game has the quality of trainers these fighters had Hearns had Emmanuel Steward....Leonard had Dundee and Duran had Ray Arcel......3 of the greatest trainers the games ever seen...........not only did they have unbelievable individual talents and qualities but they also had greatness in their corners.

Always respect your opinion Gnasher but imo Leonard didn't dominate Hagler, can't count how many times I've watched that fight and still can't decide who won,a good start and a classy finish from leonard but Hagler chased him and put the pressure on All the way. Read Leonard's book a wee while back, good read and hard too believe someone with so much natural talent was so unsure of himself going into certain fights. He says when him and Hagler got into the ring before the fight he would try abita psychological warfare so walked straight across the ring towards Hagler to see if he would budge, just before he got to marvellous he thought this guy ain't moving,I'm f****d,Hagler moved outta his way and he knew then he was well in with a chance. Some guys have more than just boxing ability,Leonard was one of them. I think Mayweather could box, with the protection afforded to modern fighters, with the best of them, the greatest defence the game has seen, lads that have copied his defensive style(Adrien Broner)are gonna dominate the game for the next few years. I also think Castillo was hard done by in the 1st fight, but Mayweather definatley won the 2nd which done him justice in my book.

hagler beat leonard in my view ..not only did leonard pick size of ring, bigger so he could run.. he also changed gloves making them bigger so knockouts where less possible or punches didnt hurt as much, leonard was the yanks golden boy of boxing they favour aggressor in usa say that if both fighters ran they would be no fight, now to me with all these factors in favour of leonard who ran most of fight looking good in last ten seconds of a few rounds is the biggest injustice since don king .. as for mayweather yeah he is very good but not unbeatable if in with someone same weight
