Terriers Ferreting

Do any of you use your terriers for ferreting, because i have got some ferrets which are nearly ready for work and my terrier is just over a year old but i have been slowly breaking him to them and so far its going fine. But i just wondered how reliable ar they as in do you trust yours 100% with the ferrets and are they a good idea to bring along on a days ferreting. With breaking him to the ferrets he doesn't biet but he just wrap his round them is this just him wanting to play? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

For me mate i dont see the point in taking terriers out. Imo most have an atitude that can be dangerous around ferrets. I have one that i take when we are ferreting at the pig farm to mop up any rats that bolt. Apart from that i dont see any need for them whilst ferreting ?? Atb

Well the main reason is that i'd like a dog that would mark the holes so i didn't waste time with empty sets, so i'd ideally like a lurcher but mum says no so the best i can do is take my terrier out and i have to admit he does mark okay, so im basically gonna weigh up the pro's and con's and see if its worth taking him out.

A "all rounder" of a terrier will mark a hole for you,hold a rabbit in a net and help push bolters to the long net with out smashing up the long net,just how any dog would help you out so why not a sencible terrier?

iv always took my terrier ferreting with me for marking holes shes not to keen on the ferrets and would worry them if she got chance but i just tie her up while the ferrets working a set. i havent had her from a pup thats why shes not broke to the ferrets. atb pal hope your terrier turns out ok for you

Been dead busy this year and not on the forums that much, but hope the little one is still enjoying it. Atb

The couple of permissions i have wont entertain lurchers on the land. so i use a beddy its all in woodland strips. the dog has been brought up with ferrets from a pup no problems. he gets to a net much quicker than me and just holds the rabbit no damage to the rabbit or net and he marks very well. if i had good ground and permission it would be a lurcher every day of the week. but beggars cant be choosers sometimes unfortunatly.

I personally only go ferreting with either a dog or shotgun. I dont get alot of enjoyment just using longnets/purse nets. Horses for courses really feller. Atb

iv been busy moving house and decorating it im in the middle of building the dog pens at the min as well as working so havent had much time to do much iv only been out ferreting a couple of times this season hoping to get out a bit more after xmas. atb for xmas and new year pal

I would say any dog is better than no dog when it comes to marking holes,I've wasted hours in the past netting up holes that look good but have nothing in them,like fireman I use my plummers as well as a lurcher,I like to ferret with at least 1 other person to work the other side of the hedge or bury,but some days do not bother with nets and just go for the sport,so long as your ferret and terrier have spent a bit of time together then you should nbe ok but I never fully trust a terrier 100% when the action kicks off,my ferrets are used for rats and rabbits as they are quite small,you may make a bit of noise the first few times you get out whilst you make the terrier wait or sit,sometimes its best to pick the terrier up and let it see whats going on but it will soon cotton on to the game,my mate with patts put me on to it as thats all he had to work,heres a few pics,

The hole the pup marked,she knows exactly whats in there now,she was picked up about 100yds further on as there was only rats in them but she marked the rat holes also and observed the action,I like a pup to see plenty early on,WM

Darbo,I take it that is aimed at me mate,if so this pic will tell you,he's really come on the last few months and will be 12 month old on the 25th of this month,my lads made up with him and this was taken after lamping for a few hours,he's an honest sort of dog that gives everything, WM

thanks wm. i have always liked the beddy/grey/ my old mate had beddy crosses 30 years real honest types. good luck to your lad with him.
