marshman 7,757
Right lads a quick question, I was having a chat with me old man and he thinks it's the bitch that adds more to a pups working style . Or do you think it's the sire or do you think it's a complete lottery and a pup could come back either way? Quote Link to post
dsullia 32
Me old fella used to say "what's in the bitch will show in the pups lad" i tend to think he knew more than i thought he did Quote Link to post
hedz31 1,308
Ive always thought to much is always put on the sire of any litter of pup's and the bitch never get's enough consideration 1 Quote Link to post

the durham digger 127
You should only ever consider breeding from a top notch dam and sire.... breeding is always a lottery, iv known litters bred from first rate working parents that should make great digging dogs but havent made the grade, but breed from the best available. 1 Quote Link to post
marshman 7,757
@ the Durham digger. I know you should only breed from the best dog and bitch available that's a given mate. The question was do you think the bitch has more input on a pups working style than say the sire? Or do you think it's a lottery on the style on how they work , not on wether they work or not! MAIN MAN 277
Dog for the brawn bitch for the brains and brawn. all the best. Quote Link to post
the durham digger 127
Its a lottery mate, geneticly the pups carry the same ammount of chromasomes from both parents and in litters iv bred iv had pups from the same litter that differ, some being like the dam and others being like the sire. Midland Nick 77
@ the Durham digger. I know you should only breed from the best dog and bitch available that's a given mate. The question was do you think the bitch has more input on a pups working style than say the sire? Or do you think it's a lottery on the style on how they work , not on wether they work or not! Genetically, either the dog or bitch can have a greater or less significant impact on any mating dependant on how dominant the particular gene is in relation to the other animal in the mating. Some dogs will stamp their physical type to lots of their pups but this impact also depends on the genetic make up of the bitch they are bred to. Having said that I was always told to plan to perpetuate a working strain through the bitch line, which may be an old wives tale, but some of those have a habit of coming true! I usually prefer to work dogs than bitches, but still have the above in mind. Generally,if it was that easy to predict genetics and breed 100% workers every time we would all be doing it as would everyone who breeds racehorses or gundogs or beef cattle etc. Genetics can be a bit of a roll of the dice but you can certainly massively influence the outcome by dealing with proven stock to start with. Just my views and I am sure others will have different ideas. Cheers everyone. 1 Quote Link to post
Billy Warren 43
To me the working stile comes from the dog teaching them Quote Link to post
bobby blackheart 1,209
in my own experiance i ve found that my bitch pups have been steady and quite clever in their style, and quick to learn- while my dog pups seem alot slower in coming on and are hard and quite stupid until they settle down around the 4yr old mark.ive bred 2 litters from the same dog and bitch and only ever had 2 that didnt want to do abit.personally i think that the bitch is just as important as the dog and you can never be to sure that all the pups will work.its a lottery.imho.atb Quote Link to post
