Guest Ditch_Shitter
What was it? " A Question for the Pro's " ? That'll scare a Lot of perfectly adaquette Dog keepers right away from daring put their head over the parapit then. For the record; I'm niether a Prostitute, nor do I make my living out of feeding Dogs. So I'm not claiming Professional status there either. What I do and have done all my life is feed my own Dogs the best way I could ever work out how to do. One thing I've learned is that Minced meat is far from best for them. The machine has deprived them of the pleasure and health promoting aspects of using their own, natural 'mincers' to do the job nature designed them for. Chewing up flesh and bone. I'd also raise a slight eyebrow at the fat content - or lack of it - in that diet. Dogs thrive on raw fat. That's why I use breast of lamb these days. Has tons of fat. Loads of bone to shear. Great meat. Minced meat I slung aside years ago. I wonder what I'll learn next ~ probably from someone elses own hands on experiance? What ever it might be, I'm always happy to examine it
skycat 6,173
Like Ditch said: fat, and a decent amount of it: chicken, lamb or beef fat. Add a bit of offal once or twice a week: heart or liver. Don't forget the minced veg and fruit: the odd cooked egg, bit of fish, natural live yoghurt: in fact the more variety the better: that way you know the dog is getting everything he needs. Doesn't hurt to give a pinch of SA37 or similar supplement either, just to be sure he's not missing out on owt!

matty 52
Always a good topic this, i am just starting to put my bitch through a month of hard conditioning and have decided to use mostly raw meat, chicken mostly bananas peanut butter fish bits of veg seaweed and other bits and bobs, but just wondering i read somewhere that if you want to add more bulk and muscle use red meat like beef! dont know if this is true any ideas?? Guest foxtrack
dogs dont need the high protien that people think they need. if you say your dog feed contains 18% protien you dont get more muscle bulk by upin it to 30% or more. exces protien gets past through the dog anyway, a energy intake is more inportant ie carbohydrate and is more inportant for muscle mass during training than protien alone
matty 52
cheers foxtrack i knew that as i have fed burns which is only 18% and agree dogs get most of there energy from fats and carbs, just i cant remember where i read it that red meat such as beef and beef ribs and steaks adds bulk! i cant think it would, even though im not looking forbulk im looking for stamina and performance and nice lean solid muscle, not loads off mass which hindes the performance! matty 52
This is a good site for raw feeders it amazes me how little you need to feed, my bitch stafford by theformula on this site only needs 280 gramms of meat and bone per day! which is nothing when you see it in a bowl, i do feed more now she working hard but if you can source the meat you can feed a dog cheaply! And they do enjoy it more with very little waste out the back end! How much do others feed or do they not measure just chuck it in and judge by the condition of the dog!! http://www.njboxers.com/tips.htm
Guest Ditch_Shitter
is cabbage and carrots ok to feed him..? Ye know when ye cutting up a cabbage for dinner, mate? Well, I don't know about you, but I don't want the very thickest parts of the leaf stalk, the bottom third, involved. So I swiftly take that bit out with a couple of slashes of the knife. I have to make sure I save those stalks in multiples of four though. Because, every time, I'll have four Dogs undivided attention as they sit, fanned around me, watching and waiting for the highlight of that day to begin. When I feed them each their fresh cut, raw stalks. Strangely enough, having said that, I always feed them their cabbage leaf softened. I either steam it or at least shred it up and microwave it in a bit of water for a while. I don't know why I do it! Instinct. It has something to do with helping break down the molecular structure of the leaf and thus ensuring it's better digested as it rushes through their systems, as all food does. Perhaps I'd previously noted undigested, raw cabbage leaf in their shit? Funny how stalks don't seem to reappear. Differant structure, I'd imagine? But there we are. Carrots? Some feed Dogs raw carrots like bones. Mine get Real bones. I've used carrots too. But I liked to slice and steam them. Dogs loved them anyway. I have heard someone issue some sort of warning about carrots once, on the net. But then I've heard warnings against most things on here. I can only tell ye what I've personally found to be the case. My Dogs love a bit of carrot. It's all far more common sense than seemingly scientifically worked out 'Diet Plans' anyway mate. No one's word is law. No one's self percieved Right makes another man Wrong. Ye'll never find me arguing about what ('natural') grub to give a Dog. Dogs are like people; Each one's a unigue individual and their metabolism's vary. So, within the normal parameters of common sense (Don't try to raise a Coursing Dog on a sole diet of carrots and cabbage, eg) just relax and chuck ye Dog a bit of what ever ye reckon he might enjoy. Just a bit, 'mind. See what the Dog makes of it and what it, in turn, makes of the Dog. Keep ye eye on their shit, their coats, their weight and their behaviour. Half a century of that and ye might just start coming to realise just how ridiculous it would be to suggest that a given ammount of a given bunch of ingrediants will perfectly suit all Dogs. Perhaps that lot also gave Matty some response to his question too? Feeding Dogs can ~ and should be ~ fun all round
