J Darcy 5,871
I personaly feel that there should be some account made of the 'specialist' hare killing dogs that have provided so much enjoyment for folk.. These selectively bred critters are vastly different to the rank and file running dog and as such,..their evolution and early creation should be jotted down and recorded for posterity.. Rather like the Fell Terrier ,.only with more accuracy.... One was started earlier this year, but it will be a while before it reaches the finishing post.....a large project and requires a great many interviews....no short cuts can be taken if an accurate end result is to be achived... higgins 75
Don't read much,..can't seem to face it... There have been some nice books done recently,...and hopefully loads more to come... I quite enjoyed 'Lurchers and Longdogs' by Ted Walsh,..not because it was a riveting read,..but more so,.because it was amongst the first treatise on the running dog in the UK...And no matter what anyone says,..you cannot beat an original... ..... Looking forwards in to the future,..I personaly feel that there should be some account made of the 'specialist' hare killing dogs that have provided so much enjoyment for folk.. These selectively bred critters are vastly different to the rank and file running dog and as such,..their evolution and early creation should be jotted down and recorded for posterity.. Rather like the Fell Terrier ,.only with more accuracy.... For myself,...it must be more of the same old,...'rabbit, rabbit, rabbit'...its sad I know,.but there it is,..viva ONLYTHECONY..... All the best to ALL crosses,....cheers,.CHALKWARREN.... perhaps YOU could write the book Chalky?A sort of South and South again type of beginning,an inteviewing of all the hare coursers in the famed venues of hare coursing middle bit,and an ending every bit as rivetting as Plummer's Fell Terrier, make sure you wear the red Kagool to reinforce the originality,oh,and don't forget the tape recorder or is it digitalcorder now, good luck with it,just make sure you have five years to spend on interviewing everyone, and if this is succesful you could do a north and north again sequel to it,don't forget the hare dogs up the north......by the way does that look like teeth marks on that road casualty.? all the best, Higgins. mole trapper 1,693
Reminiscences of woodland stalking--- Leo Ritchie. Reflections of a countryman--- Fred J Taylor. Its my delight --- Vesey-Fitzgerald. The ferret and Ferreting guide - Graham Wellstead. Sporting Riffle - Robin Marshall-Ball. They are not in the right order, and to be fair i have collected hundreds of books all across the field sports spectrum and all are a pleasure to own and read over and over, preferably in front the open fire with a glass of port or sloe gin to hand, roll on the autumn. Phil Lloyd 10,738
@ Higgins.... I don't think that I would have the required concentration span or temperament that would be needed to quiz all the famous hare coursers... My own forte is in jotting down my experiences hunting the humble cony,...perhaps not quite as exciting or financially profitable a project as one depicting chasing the fabulous Brown hare would be,..but there ya go... "You do what you do best",...I know my place.... Cheers,...CHALKWARREN.... Edited July 5, 2007 by Chief
