Alex - SACS 5
Springer, I have checked with the girls and there has been no email query on the subject. Just call me - we are constantly busy, but make time for and like speaking to our members. I will look out for your call. On the matter of legal fees there are fewer exclusions with the new self-funding set up, we can now act on applications as well as revocations, refusals etc + wildlife crime. There is no £100k limit. We can act quicker - the legal fees insurance was too slow. We (SACS) can decide cases on merit - which is a heck of a lot better than a numerical desk jockey from an underwriter with little or no understanding of country sports. If a case is obviously unwinnable and our legal experts advise as such then it would be foolish and imprudent use of collective members' money to fund the case further. If you are going to lose why on earth would you fund it further when the best position might be to mitigate the loss position by planning for recovery when the time is right. Legal support was one of the founding principles of SACS and, without blowing trumpets, looking after members who are unfairly treated in wildlife crime or firearms licensing is something we are really good at - last 2 weeks SSPCA cases and Sheriff judgement are a great example. The new website will be better at showing what we do - working quietly in the background on behalf of members without grandstanding in front of cameras. Actually looking after members full stop is what we are good at. SACS is run by members for members and everything we do is for members. Simple and altruistic, but that was the SACS culture 20 years ago and it is the same now. Ok, benefits of self-funding over legal fees insurance through the financial markets: • Better value for money + no set financial limits • Fewer exclusions, so we can do more for our members • WE will decide funding merits rather than an insurance company - justice and fairness, rather than commercial mathematics • Earlier action - we no longer need to wait for an event to trigger the insurance policy (this is vital) • UK’s very best firearms and wildlife crime solicitors, advocates and barristers (and I mean the very best - as some of you well know) So, if you are facing genuine injustice in wildlife law and firearms/shotgun licensing then we are here for you and will work hard on your behalf, as we have done for many members over twenty years. Common sense dictates that we cannot cover you if: • Your membership lapses • You deliberately flout the law • You are not absolutely upfront and honest with SACS • SACS is not informed of all material facts • The issue began before you joined us Also we will not continue to use members’ funds to finance a case where you choose not to follow the legal advice given. If you need legal help, let us know as soon as you are aware of even a possible problem - things are always easier to sort out before they go too far. Legal fees support is only one of the many things we do for members and we are constantly neck deep in consultations, legislation and protecting ALL country sports. SACS may not be everyone's cup of tea - we are like an extended family looking out for each other and entirely not-for-profit. It is that financial efficiency that allows us to self-fund cases. Yes, we are Scotland's largest country sports organisation, but most of that is by word of mouth recommendation. We don't have big glossy adverts or big trade sponsors or a marketing team - driven only by membership numbers for commercial self-perpetuation, like so many big charities etc. And we are not set up as some deliberate competition to other country / sporting organisations who we actually work closely with and greatly respect and are usually members of too. By working together we achieve so much more for all our varied memberships. If a member is unhappy I want to know the reasons why sharpish. Though we strive for perfection there can obviously be no such thing. As yet, I have not come across an unhappy member and I speak to many each week, but I am always ready for the call. We are not a business, but are run on tight business-like lines. That professionalism shines in the work SACS does for members and as we continue to grow strongly it is something we will build from. More soon. Any dramas come and speak to us. This is why we are here. I hope this clarifies. Very best, Alex
