Marking Dog

Recommended Posts

I remember one old poacher who had a border collie that he used for ferreting, and this was an excellent marking Dog.

I recently went a mooch, and met a pet owner with a border collie pet, that was marking obvious burys that contained Rabbits, this came natural as the owner told me she had never encouraged it.

So my question is, can any breed be turned into a marking Dog,

Or some are natural better than others?

if ye dog dont do it naturally then take the dog an a ferret, no nets, an everytime ye come to a hole the dog shows intrest in, drop in a ferret, dog will soon click, helps aswell if you have burys so

i think any dog can mark it's still part of there d.n.a to hunt. some have een breed with more prey drive and a better sense of smell

When i got my first ferret at 11 we did not own a dog. My dads cousin had a hienze 57, god knows what was in it. She said i could try and train it for marking. It was fat as hell and about 2 yrs old. We used to go on our bikes ferreting, most places being a minimum of 2 miles up to 8 miles one way. Anyway started gently with this dog running it beside the bike, gradually got it in shape. Got it used with the ferret and just took it with us and let it watch with lead over the spade at first. It took a few months of being out every sat and sunday until it was a usefull dog but it made a good marker and the dog was as fit as a fiddle. I never had a dog of my own till i was 15, my father bought me a russel pup from ferreting parents, as i had got the 57 till a decent standard the russel was easy to trian. The 57 was about the size of a small lab, it did have a little bit of lab in it. They got it for nothing as a pup, this mad world now it would have been given a fancy made up name and sold for £500, it makes you sick reading the classifieds in the local paper, we had a new one this week, boradore pups, border collie x lab. MADNESS

If you like the Border and accept you might have to shell out a few quid, dont think you will go far wrong with one from decent steady parents. My brother owns two and both are steady dogs, good little workers and easy to live with and pack well with other dogs. As has already been said most of the terrier breeds will natural mark in my experience, if giving enough exposure to work as youngsters. Beleive it or not I have a schnauzer pet dog and this little fella makes a decent ferreting dog and seems to have taken to it naturally, good luck with your choice cheers Matt

i think any terrier will pick marking up if its out and about where there are rabbits, my border x patt marks spot on, shes so chilled out normally so when she takes a interest in a hole theres a rabbit in there, guess we all get to know how our dogs mark etc by there body langauge! shes just had a litter of pups so ill have 2 terriers at it soon! just hope the lurcher can keep up now!!

Lots of dogs will mark of any breed if given the chance, most terriers cannot help themselves but to mark.

My own failing of late was to get a russell bitch from a pedigree line. She looks the part, but has less sense than what she was born with. But i'm stuck with her now for maybee the next 13 yrs or so.

If you go for a terrier, go for a steady type and line.

If i didnt want a dog for anything else but marking i'd be looking at a good obedient collie, amazing how many farmers will overlook one of the breeds most interested in sheep, just because they have them. ;)
