Stretch177 39
What dog would people recommend for just marking sets, no running dogs as the farmers won't allow it. Thinking of a terrier, but unsure which type, although have been looking at a border terrier, mainly due to me liking how they look and reading about there temperment etc. This will be my first dog for working, so would like a breed that is easy to work, calm, good with other dogs and people as it will be in the house. Any help will be greatly recieved. Regards Stretch Quote Link to post
huntmark 18
You would probably be better getting yourself a jack Russell. Seen some really good ferreting companion made from them and they make good house pets just look how popular they are 1 Quote Link to post

fitchet 788
Most dogs will mark. If i couldnt have a running dog it would be either a beddie or manchester terrier. Atb Quote Link to post

darbo 4,774
A few people find themselfs in this position i can only use a terrier on my ferreting permissions. ive seen good russells, borders and lakie types mark very well. i use a bedlington very good marking dog, great temperament, lives in.On the stubborn side to train as a young dog but he is obedient and works close.i dont think you could go wrong with any of the types mentioned as long as you put the work in early obedience, socialising, breaking to ferrets stock etc. good luck with your choice. 1 Quote Link to post
Country Joe 1,411
This is the best marking dog i have had, sadly passed away a number of years ago' No sticking down holes or scratching or whining, just one sniff, and if the Rabbit was home she would lie down at the back of the bury, which she is doing in the photograph. As she was bred the other way round, she has flung to the Bedlington, but still fast enough for them bunnies. She was a genuine first cross Whippet X Bedlington, But as you can see, you could just say she was a Bedlington Terrier 2 Quote Link to post

wi11ow 2,657
first its natural thing and then you must learn what there mark is then they tell you its here and YOU reading it right every dog does it different 1 Quote Link to post
reddawn 2,173
How do yu get your digs to mark ? if ye dog dont do it naturally then take the dog an a ferret, no nets, an everytime ye come to a hole the dog shows intrest in, drop in a ferret, dog will soon click, helps aswell if you have burys somewhere that you can see the bunnys drop into on your approach, then youll know if dog is tellin truth or what hole to let dog sniff, dont reward a dog for marking, a ferretin in should be its reward, just the way i do it, but most my dogs do it naturally 4 Quote Link to post

The one 8,463
Any dog will mark burrows , if i dont take the lurcher ,the spaniel or lab will do it , watch what strain of jack russell you go for some are hypo ,and as said dont over praise a young dog for marking as you could cause it to false mark 1 Quote Link to post
