RobertoS86 3
Hi, so I currently have a CZ 452 .22 but I'm after something with a bit more range. So I've thort about a .17 hmr but also a .22 wmr. But I'm not sure on what to get? It will be used for bunny bashing but I'm also doing a lot of hare at the moment. Whats the lowest calibre center fire and do you think I could get it granted for my current quarry? Cheers, Rob Quote Link to post
hutchey 147
Hi Rob, I'm a novice so doubt i'll add much value. I've been told by a few people that going .17 hmr is good for longer range, especially when buggs gets used to you coming! No idea on centre fire yet as i'm also looking at my first for foxes and also for deer. I have found out that some FLO's are clued up and some less so. My advice is make sure you know what type of centre or rimmy can do what, the grain of bullet you might want to use and then have all that to hand when you chat to your FLO. I know what i'd like but know i'm unlikely to get it so am having to be understnding of the fact that perhaps say a 50grain bullet from a 308 is ok for fox and a 130 grain for deer. (Don't quote me on these numbers as i'm only illustrating a point of thinking) idea being that i could chat to the FLO and say something like i have issue with foxes, blah, etc and that i aslo am DSC and intend to go on accompanied or unaccompanied stalks BUT i only wish to have 1 centrefire and not necessarily 2. the grain choice might make a difference if it showed that i understood the differences. Now, this is all purely specualtion and only from what very little info i have read, been told and heard. I'm not saying it's right as i'm finding my way in this lovely sport. Hopefully the far more knowledgable folks on here will offer much more helpful advice. All the best anyways Quote Link to post
paulus 26
c/f 22 hornet, 204 or the new 17 hornet http://www.hornady.com/store/17-Hornet Quote Link to post
tegater 789
Hmr usefull for the extra range and still relatively cheap, about the same as a shotgun cart. CF you have a choice of loads, .204, .22 hornet, .222, .223, .17 etc. For me it would depend on how much longer stuff you will actually do, and if in the future you will kill any fox as well. It would also depend on how much damage you want to the bunny and hare meat! Quote Link to post
paulus 26
round cost might be a factor http://www.dauntseyguns.co.uk/downloads/AmmoPriceList.pdf Quote Link to post

The HMR is better of the two for your quarry, and as for a CF for bunny/hare...forget it! That's my opinion! ATB! Quote Link to post
coldweld 65
Winchester are bringing out a new RF in the new year ! Might be what you are looking for, faster than the hmr and cheaper than C/F Quote Link to post

tegater 789
Yep just read up on it. 500fps faster than any other rimmy, so at least 3000+fps, and 2.5" groups at 300. Good competition for the .17 hornet! Quote Link to post

GEOFF.223 83
i had a ,17hmr but as it makes just as much noise as a .223 i didn't see the point in having it any more as i can get cheap round which cost as little as the .17hmr for my .223. as said above don't get rid of the .22 i did and now im paying to get slot back on license. yes i liked my .17 but the noise for a rimmy and cost of ammo put me off, the original thought of a rimmy is take it out and shoot a couple of hundred round for fun at little expense not with the hmr. keep the .22 get a .223 im geting a box of 20 for £7 and there accurate. hmr are £15+ for 50 not a mega difference 2 Quote Link to post

Rake aboot 4,935
.223 are mega cheap just now cause of the military thing. I use .222 and bloody love it 17, never appealed to me really, why bother ? what ranges are you on about ? Why cant you get to around 60mtr of a rabbit ?, buy a ghillie suit rather than a bigger gun.
