gnasher16 30,024
If Joe had fought Jones jr and Hopkins earlier in thier/his career and beaten them, then there would be less debate about Joe being a "great" imo. Some of Joe's defences were against very poor opponents, not his fault fully I know but the calibre of opponent has a lot of bearing on debates of this kind and thats where Joe's becomes a little questionable, as a local lad I'd love for him to be classed as one of the world's greatest but sadly he isn't, one of Britains greatest.......no doubt. And it really is that simple.
gnasher16 30,024
No disrespect but if he had fought out of London, especialy gnash's manor ,gnash would of gave him big licks no doubt about it. You already said that mate......and i say again,i am probably biased to my own area and fighters ive known.......but im not completely blind..............what does it take for people to see Calzaghe is ONLY spoken of in all time great terms in Britain...............but im the biased one If anybody can find an authentic list chosen by respected bodies The Ring mag and the likes...of all time boxing greats that places Joe Calzaghe in the top 20.................i,ll eat my hat !.....Its such a silly naive thing to even suggest. TUFFTY Its a fair shout Tuffty when you look at the era he fought in and the names he overcame.......he fought and beat at least 4 OTHER all time great fighters that would appear on any all time great lists...........thats the measure of what is needed to be spoken of in " all time great " terms......id put Leonard around 4th or 5th but certainly wouldnt argue too strongly against your choice. socks 32,253
Joe told me that the biggest downer of his whole career was after he retired and was being introduced to sugar ray Leonard in America at a fight and Leonard not knowing who he was .....
