Phil Lloyd 10,738
Does any body use a priest to kill the rabbits in the net? I normally take them out and stretch the neck, im going to give the priest ago, as most of the time the head comes through one of the mesh holes and presents its self lovely for a tap on the back of the head, meaning you can do it quick, renet, then mess around untangling the rabbit from the net. Any one have any thoughts on this? Don't have any thoughts on this practice,.other than,..try to learn how best to dispatch a rabbit,.it is not a hard skill to master,..and should always be undertaken with respect, and speed....I've taught scores of lads, how to neck or chin rabbits,..it is easy.... inan 841
Magwitch and I stretch them, but we always employ a priest at the end of the day, just to say the last rites over them. Edited December 11, 2012 by CHALKWARREN 2 Quote Link to post
Tiny 7 1,694
I chin all my rabbits (night or day)... Likes been said chin in the net throw too one side and put another net over, That way you can untangle the rabbit at your own leisure.. All that getting struggleing live rabbits out of the nets is not the easyest or best way IMO but each too there own as long as the out comes the same and old buggys in the bag 1 Quote Link to post
Brimmer 220
I skinned a couple off the other night for a mate, and was surprised to see how bruised the neck and shoulders were from the good old stretch method. I must have bruised thousands of rabbits over the years. Would chinning or a priest do less damage to the neck end than the stretch? Quote Link to post
Mick C. 229
An over zelous whack with a preist will result in the rabbitts eyes leaving there sockets. Chinning when cared out correctley is quick and humane Quote Link to post
Phil Lloyd 10,738
That is strange Brimmer...? I also stretch/pull a rabbit in certain situations,.but rarely see any damage or bruising to the neck/shoulder area...? Some lads, use far to much power to dispatch a wee mammal....they seem to literally stretch the neck,.almost away from its body,...whereas the correct way is to 'slide' the neck vertebrae, away from its joint,... I think you Northern lads are having more than two Weetabix for your breakfast,...you just don't know your own fecking strength Quote Link to post

If they were ferreted ,,,, it was proberbly the ferret, that did the bruising ,,, sometimes there arses get bruised as well, from the ferrets ... Quote Link to post
The one 8,503
Unless you have problems like arthritis in your hand etc it's easy to chin them drop them still in the net and reset a fresh net Quote Link to post
ledders666 6
Does anyone have a good video of chinning? Ive never done it, seen it done but forgot, i normally stretch Quote Link to post
CWN-HELA 228
Does anyone have a good video of chinning? Ive never done it, seen it done but forgot, i normally stretch If you go on youtube and have a look at the lads ferreting on there, all rabbits are killed in the nets. When i was yougher i use to take the rabbit out of the net, but not any more just grab the back of its neck and push its chin up so its head goes over you hand holding its neck. The one 8,503
Chinning the easiest way as long as your using the right purse nets . Quote Link to post
ledders666 6
it is, didnt realise in was a vid. So the idea is to roll the rabbit head over your hand, and in doing so this will break the neck? Quote Link to post
Brimmer 220
Yep vid is working, and no its not ferret damge, i do stretch the neck, must be getting carried away. It looked like serious internal bleeding all around the neck area, with dark clotting, must be me being heavy handed, will try a bit more finesse in future. Quote Link to post
