ledders666 6
Does any body use a priest to kill the rabbits in the net? I normally take them out and stretch the neck, im going to give the priest ago, as most of the time the head comes through one of the mesh holes and presents its self lovely for a tap on the back of the head, meaning you can do it quick, renet, then mess around untangling the rabbit from the net. Any one have any thoughts on this? Quote Link to post
patterdalejoel 669
i karate chop it with the back of my hand if its not in a stretchable position in the net, then fully stretch the neck when its out of the net. wouldnt feel the need to ever use a priest Quote Link to post
smithie 2,443
i got a touch or arthritis in my left hand so sometimes i use a priest but not always, simply as i forget it but i manage without it. Quote Link to post
darbo 4,774
try it what suits one man may not suit another. everyone has there own methods, the only thing i use a priest on are trout. forgot to add i prefer to chin them each to their own. Bunny Boiler 177
What if you are on a large warren and the preist is the other side of the warren? Also, if you are eating them (or they go for human consumption) then bashing them on the noggin gives them a fair ol' bit of bruising to the top of the shoulder meat too. Just dispatch out of the net, and while you are busy un tangling, just put your foot in the hole. Or an alternate option is to work in pairs. Whoever catches the rabbit dispatches, out of the way, while the other re nets. This method depends how many people you ferret with and how many rabbits are popping at any one time. pie-eater 377
I prefer to chin rabbits in the net. Using this method I can kill the rabbit quik and chuck it out of the way while I put another net over the hole. Then Im free to untangle the rabbit and sort the net out. patterdalejoel 669
i dont like chinning as im not convinced the rabbit always dies. i like to stretch the neck as at least i know they are dead Quote Link to post
fitchet 788
I always kill them in the net or let the dog hold them while i quickly chuck a fresh net down. Never felt the need to use a priest on anything other than pigeon/pheasants. But use what will work better for you. Atb Quote Link to post

NewBarnFerrets 3
I usually use a priest because I am no good as stretching their necks when in the net The times I don't have a priest handy they always seem to riggle that bit more & make my job of removing them from the net harder ...I guess chinning would be the way to go, but as already mentioned stretching is a better option. My knock on the head is probably only a stunner to stop the struggle when netted as I always stretch when removed just to make sure! My priest has a loop of string on the end of the handle & so I usually have it dangling from my wrist when ferreting. Quote Link to post
NewBarnFerrets 3
But as already said...find what method suits you. Quote Link to post

rabbitcatcher 1 287
It can be hard to try and stretch a rabbits neck in the net as you need the rabbit to be at half stretch at least so you can get to grips with it,but I find with chinning as long as you can get your thumb and finger round it's neck, it can be in a ball but you can still push its chin upwards once learned, very handy. 1 Quote Link to post

Pmsl. a chin will only stun, havent seen one killed outright by it News to me,I chin all of my rabbits in the net weather it's a purse net, trammell, or long net and if it only stunned them I'd end everyday with no rabbits, which doesn't happen if your close I will give you a demo, lol 2 Quote Link to post
