hily 379
when you let him of the lead weave from side to side as you walk and if he pulls away walk backwards a little try to make him keep an eye on you before he gains to much confidence . Quote Link to post

GEOFF.223 83
a good dog trainer told me as its a springer don't throw any thing for it until it knows to sit and stay, its was hard not to throw anything for it until it understood sit and stay (took a month to teach her but she was 4 months went i got her) he told me as soon as she get to the point she sits [bANNED TEXT] u throw a decoy it will be much easier to teach her direction. so [bANNED TEXT] she got to that point i throw a dummy front left and right made her sit for several seconds then pointed to which one i wanted her to get, [bANNED TEXT] she retrieves the one i told her i tell her to stay and i then get the others myself as not to make her think everyone is for her. she is 1,5 years old and people seem to be impressed by her as its the first dog i ever trained 1 Quote Link to post

Irish Lurcher 1,013
God you need to let him be a pup first, ur heart seems to be in the right place, I am just into my first season with my bitch, I took it real slow with her and allowed her to grow up and bond, she was five months when I got stuck into her training and still I went easy on her. Absolutely correct by Irish Lurcher. You wouldn't try to teach an 8 week old baby to walk or talk! Let the pup grow up and allow it to form a bond with you, play with it, the puppy needs to see you as it's best friend - it's provider of fun and free running exercise! The pup will soon let you know when more considered training is necessary, usually around 6 months old. Also it is important to remember, not to over exercise a young puppy, you can cause serious health problems. Edited December 11, 2012 by wyeman 1 Quote Link to post

cabbiejack 37
thanks for the replys and tips .... i will just play with him then and wont go into anyform of training atm until about 5 / 6 months ... just worried he might pick up some bad habbits in the mean time tho if i dont keep the work up .... or will he take note at 5/6 months of age and learn the basics then ??? thanks Quote Link to post
stroller 341
dont get confused he should be able to sit and come when called on command now, retrieving should be a game at all times and get him lead trained so he walks at heel. When he has the sit and recall move on to the stop (sitting at the whistle or/and hand signal) moving further away until he does it at a distance Dont let him hunt too much unless your confident you can stop him. but at all times make it enjoyable and try and finish on a high. 1 Quote Link to post
