xHOUNDx 33
Alright gals and boys, well into my first proper ferreting season now and getting the nack of it now, as it stands i've got 2 stinkers poley hob and a small caramel coloured jill. had some good days alrady bags of 15 -20 biggest i've had so far is 21. need a bit of advice, i went out on saturday to some fairy decent sets nothing too big this particular one was a 10 holer, netted up in goes in the hob 5 minutes later a nice rumbling sound and 3 rabbits bolted out the same hole this particular hole was the only fecking hole not neeted a little bolt hole which i hadent seen which was covered up by dead stinging nettles and 3 rabbits bounced away across the field bollocks! after another 10 minutes the fert come out and the dog had stopped marking so we decided to move on, we come across a bigger 15 holer under an old lean to set bck in a bit of woodland, dog marked really well on what looked like a well used entrance hole so nets went down and decided to put both ferrets in, 15 minutes went by without a noise or sign of the ferts so out come the tracker and showed they were both moving about at 6 ft so i decided to leave them too it, then the dog started going mad round the other side of the lean to i thought it might ave been that a rabbit had bolted my mate wernt paying any attention hes more intrested in facebook on his fecking iphone which i was cose to smashing quite a lot of times throughout the day went round there and there was 4 rats running in and out of the rabbit holes f*ck it! the jill come running out the same hole so i grabbed her and shoved her back in the box for a bit, found the hob he had held to ground at 4ft out come the spades and i dug down to him i broke through by his time it was pitch black we had lost the light and i was getting worried, asoon as i saw his legs i grabbed him and puled him up soved my hands don expecing to grab the back end of a rabbit instead it was a f*****g rats nest i hate to thin what my hand touched and i dont really want to think about it i hate the little fuckers! so all in all a shit couple of hours! my terriers are going to be sorting them fukers out this weekend! bu what i was more woried about is its the same everytime the ferts chase the rabbits but the rabbits refuse to bolt every single time you can hear them running about , is it something im doing wrong or is it the ferrets hant got the experience yet? its their first season both from working lines. some pics : cheers hound Quote Link to post
The one 8,474
Might be your to noisy up top setting the nets etc the rabbits hear you and figure out its safer below ground ,or your ferrets are young and no pushing the rabbits hard enough to bolt them or loosing them if your doing too big a burrow for two ferrets , stick at it mate as the season goes on it should get better 2 Quote Link to post

martnmagik 68
how does your dog mark up? is it a silent sniff and point or is it a head in hole and grunt and snort mark? keep working the stinkers and they will come good. Quote Link to post
Guest vin
Seems to me fella your not doing too bad already..maybe there was one or 2 bunnies below as well as the rats..or maybe there had been rabbits sharing the same holes for a while, hence the dog marking..or maybe the dog was marking the rats.?.iether way there was something home and the ferts and dog were in and at em. . just be carefull not to get the ferrets smashed up with the rats as sometimes it can spoil them a bit, One of my jills loves rats..some take well to it...but ive seen a good few spoiled by doing to many rats...Much prefer a smoker for the dirty little critters. I did a big warren last week and bolted 3 rabbits and about 15 rats all out of the same holes...laughed my sox off when dog picked 1 up and it quickly dropped it again..lol. Quote Link to post

Mick C. 229
sounds to me your dog and ferrets are spot on. You cant be doing anything wrong otherwise you wouldnt be getting double figure bags. Your ferrets bolted three out the set your dog has marked then set about the rats. You couldnt really ask for any more. Been handy if the dog had stuck is head in that bolt hole though 1 Quote Link to post
