IMO the insulation allows the dog to Thrive.

The uninsulated allow the dog to Survive.

Fit a 110litre drum inside a 210 litre drum and fill the space between with expanding foam insulation.

The type of expanding foam you get in a can.(Polycell do a version)

 

 

The timber guides keep the smaller drum central and allow brackets to be attached later.

Spray the foam at the back through a drilled hole.

Make sure the inside drum will be tight against the lid

 

 

The bolts in the support bracket allow you to level the drum on a sloped yard.

A metal door flap at the front will keep the inside draught free.

 

 

Finish with a bench on top for inspecting the dog after it returns from working.

It could not be too difficult to build something like this and it would last for years.

I know this is an old thread but it cropped up on a search…. 

I just wondered if anyone had built any of these and how they found them? Really like the look of the excellent design drawn up here, might have a bash at making something similar.

I used to use  the large ones  for lurcher kennels , drill a hole half way up  the lid then use a jigsaw cut a straight line across the center of the lid and then cut a semi circle opening , that’s enough to let the dog in and out yet stops the bedding falling out . 
drill hole top and bottom of the barrel then you can attach couple bits of wood to stop barrel rolling and get it off the floor , I used straw as bedding .

not as fancy as the metal doors or sunbathing platform  etc but lot cheaper.

I house all of my dogs in motel type kennels since we have wet winters and a dog on a chain can make a mud pit in a very short time period. I have some blue Barrels in size 166lts for sleeping boxes and cut the end door 5/6 inches from the top, then fit 2 end panels. One thing no one has mentioned so far is, when you plan to use one for a medium to bigger sized dog they really need a flat floor inside the drum since it's lying sideways, normally this floor is not very wide at all (12 inches), just enough for the dog to lye down flat. They make great sleeping boxes, draft and rain, plus the thick side walls of these barrels will take a lot of chewing.

That's a better idea, cutting straight across and the round at the top of the drum. Wish I had thought of that, must make a note to myself, go slower and think about it lol.

Couple of blue drums I use for the terriers. I had them laying around, they do the job. Easy enough to clean out.

2 X2 timber runners and frame fixed to rear wall,marine ply inside the barrel on 1 X 1 runners(any condensation runs down and out of drainage holes and keeps bedding dry,on top another piece and a piece of carpet ,so they can sit out and catch some rays...used the 30 ltr barrels for the terriers,110 ltr for the runners

Ideal them mate, thanks for posting. I was thinking the same myself either going 30 or 60 L rather than the 110 on the earlier design posted. Do you find they use the benches on top? Not sure if mine would

All my dogs used to  sit out on top of them.the 30 litre square shape barrels are ideal for terriers,big enough to turn around,and stops them pissing over bedding when you got a dirty cnut in kennels

I used to use the bigger barrels cut in half and get 2 beds out of them I'd put a ply lid on top and whatever the weather 1 or more of the terriers would be laying on the fckn ply lid
