looking at getting a new dog

gotta 5 yr old bull x atm bought it as my first dog its beautiful, its quick and walks in the day time fantastic but when it hunts it nails the first bunny and pulls your arm off ....its a bit over powerign for bunnies and justwondering what cross everyone recommends to a beginner i want sumthing not so powerful and too use on dunes .....only been lamping since september had the dog since march and bought it working

Id favour a beddi x for bunnys over a saluki x for rabbits. You wont go a miss with a collie x either

Unless you really dont get on with the dog you've got i would try and train him to do what you want how you want rather than starting again

I agree with tyla. I lamp rabbits alot with my bull/grey. Doesnt catch loads but can bag a couple at a time. Atb

I have a 3year old bull whippet & she smashes what ever i put in front of her...

I must admit she is a little head strong at times but i wouldnt have her any other way.

shes just too big for rabbiting in my area cos ur up and down dunes .....whats better for rabbiting a whippet or greyhound cross bedlington ?

What makes you say its too big for up and down dunes? My old whippet ( which was crap) caught a few on the dunes but was hopeless on the big flat fields I normally do.

Im only here second owner and the dogs like a member of my family i could never get rid of here but she has her uses in big fields etc ive got enough work for 2 dogs

Collie/greyhound x whippet. Bed x grey. 3/4 whippet x bed. Whippet.... The list goes on. Put the time in and they'll all do the job.

I've hunted the dunes for over 30 years, just get yourself a lurcher to lurcher bred animal of average height (22" to 25") and out of sound working parents, you'll have lot of fun with a dog of that type.

 

Edited to add... You'll be surprised what type of dog can do well on that type of ground, it's different running but brought on to it well, some big 'ol powerhouses of mutts can be very impressive...

Steve, if you give that dog of yours a damn good go i'll bet it'd get on the game, nowt wrong with getting sommat else but make sure what you got has been given every chance.
