dam and sire, which is most important?

Recommended Posts

when breeding 1st cross, you usually put your herding/bull etc over the greyhound.

i've heard various reasons for this, i.e they'll be taller (? lol), easier for bitch to carry and for birth.

but when breeding 2nd,3rd,4th etc crosses, is it the same story/weird theories, when selecting a dog to serve or be served. if you have a specific type or trait that your trying to get.

Could be either mate when breeding your looking for what your dog doesnt have or lacks in and choose a dog/bitch that has the qualities your dog might lack in. Ie stamina, coat, feet etc

Most prefere the greyhound as sire, but these crosses are rare as its much easier to find a greyhound bitch and breed from it.

true,

Bryn my 1x collie grey, his dam is a greyhound, sire collie , and i think he as threw alot to geyhound shape+ size+speed. My pup 1x gsd x grey, only a pup still but i think threw alot to is dam who is the gsd , sire Razzmatazz greyhound. I know on paper it should be ( 4/8s on both sides) but i think having dam as base line(working dog) does make a differnce , with the sire greyhound.

I have no previous experience of crossing these but I have the Dam ( S.B.T. ) Sire was 3/4 whip X 1/4 Greyhound. If ever breeding surely what your trying to do is improve on what you have ? No matter what your trying to add it all depends on what you have to breed from / with. If you have the Bitch then you will have no choice but to improve her weakness's and if the Dog then maybe try to see if you can pass his abilities to his offspring ? After all you wouldn't breed from a dog that was crap would you :D Or would you ??

why would you breed from a dog with bad feet in first place, its going to come back haunt you somewhere down the line!

Dam and sire, which is most important was the question I believe?.....well one without the other is about as much use as a chocolate fire guard if your intent on breeding pups :-)

very true. but which parents genes gives a pup it bits

I still reckon mitochondrial dna plays a large part.

( Dam passes more genes)

With the horses I would use the 80/20 dam/sire

BUT what about the fact that the dam spends 10 weeks influencing the pups - could argue that the grey temperament is better.

some do say mcdl takes an influence this as neva been proved , but as a good stockmanship of old school thought agood top stallion or stud animal of the canine variety , willl and does have a influence on the the calibre of the welps . mediocre bitches covered with the very best of the type desired , will give good results no degrees necesary just simple old common sense aquire the best studs that produce the goods on a regular basis . atb bunnys.

Dna is 50/50 so first xs can have a mixed litter, say a first x collie /greyhound ,you could get some pups more like g/hounds some more like collies and some inbetween ,for example if the bitch gives the pups more dna,i have a litter here from a rough coated brindle bitch to a smooth black dog, every pup in the litter is smooth and black,
