gary.l 61
Hi all, I've a rat infestation out in the chicken run, which will be dealt with but its after putting me off eating any eggs which I've been giving to the dogs every day, are they ok for me to eat, I'm probably being a bit paranoid but could do with a bit of reasurance. Marvin 193
Might be a silly question but here goes; I buy fresh eggs from a co-worker who has her own chickens, she tells people not to wash the eggs because they will go off quite quickly, is this so? Carraghs Gem 1,675
Yes... Eggs are porous thats why you should never eat eggs that have been laying in mud/water Washing removes the protective coating on the shell. although i wash eggs that are soiled... And wash my hands after handling eggs for any reason This should answer some of your questions: http://www.backyardchickens.com/t/24997/to-wash-or-not-to-wash-eggs
chartpolski 25,156
I'm fairly new at chicken keeping, so I'm learning as I go along. I've been told to wash eggs in cold water, as washing them in hot water par-cooks them and makes them go "off" quicker. Cheers.
darbo 4,776
duck eggs are more porous than chicken eggs.
