Can I ask you fellas ... I've got a catapult for my 8yr old son. It's a hand made one, bigish and sturdy (my neighbour is crafty at stuff like that; it's a belter). What ammo would you recommend - bearing in mind he's 8 lol I was looking for a safe alternative and someone somewhere said they use dried peas instead of the pellets?

What's your opinion then? I know nowt about ammo/catapults etc lol

Give over Paulus ... a metal detector ... if I had the money for one sure!

What size is best for kids? Wouldn't the dried peas be a cheap and cheerful and environmentally friendly option? Am trying to avoid him taking out someone's eye  Obviously he'll get a safety lecture (I am a woman after all) but still ... this catapult is f-ing ace! I had a go with it, it shoots well far!

go with marbles from the £1 shop  cheap metal detectors are about http://www.amazon.co.uk/National-Geographic-Digital-Metal-Detector/dp/B007XDNFN6/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1354993730&sr=8-3 then he could have real ammo

Until he's well practised and proved sensible I don't want to give him ammo he can kill things with

Marbles might be ok if I can find small enough ones I guess. Good idea  It's that or a pouch full o'peas in his stocking

Maybe next year I'll invest in a metal detector lol

That's the plan Paulus! Yesterday I gave the three of them an massive empty box, some glue, scissors and markers and said 'away and go make something'. Didn't hear from them for AGES.

my grandad(RIP) gave me my first catty one day up his allotment, he put an old penny up and just said when you can hit that 4 times out of 5 come and tell me, hes still waiting
