swag 54
I apologise in advance I tried and tried but couldn't help but put my tuppence or two in. Don't really care if any one disagrees because my opinion is only relevant to me and the fact that I choose to voice is surely what a forum was designed for, any way here goes.... Any body who doesn't have enough experience in this game to make their own mind up, should just sit back and listen to these two experienced terriermen. They are merely doing what working dog men have done since, well since men started working dogs. That is discussing the merits of dogs in relation to the task they are expected to do. This month it's pats and plummers, next month it will be Russell's and lakies. It will never stop, but what will happen is a young lad will read this post and think, I like the sound of them plummers, or I have got to get me a black dog. He'll go and buy a pup and it will begin, a life long addiction to working dogs. An addiction we all suffer from. What is the best terrier, well to me it's the last terrier that left an earth triumphant, who stayed till it was dug to, who held its quarry when it's owner broke through, who walked (or was carried) back to the motor with its tail straight ready for another day. I say this because at that point in time, that little terrier was the only guarenteed dog on the planet. We all say we have dogs that will never let us down, our guarenteed dogs ( I have one or two myself ) but until they succeed again they are just another terrier who has the chance to prove itself. There's a lot we can do to make the out come a favourable one, but the truth is there are stayers, bayers and jackers across the spectrum of terrier breeds. On the topic of ALL ROUND DOGS I believe this is a dog owned by a guy who for what ever reason cannot keep enough dogs to cover the work he requires. Therefore a dog that may have excelled at one thing is expected to learn different trades, trades his character my not suit. A terrier retrieving shot game, surely a spaniel or lab would better suit, a digging dog working rabbit, surely a Plummer would suit( only joking). Our friend the shooting terrier becomes softer mouthed or punished for ragging a good bird, or the faithful digging dog who gets made to look stupid as he starts baying at those rabbits lying up in reynards favourite hole. Basically what I'm saying is an all round dog is a dog that you have to MAKE DO WITH. Does the general builder work to the same level as the master craftsman? Any way, thanks to wm and fox dropper, an interesting and enjoyable read. The best terrier, sounds silly when ya think about it, do my young black pups make me laugh as I watch them baying at my cat in the yard? Do my old workers fill me with pride as I open the kennel and they strut out ready for a days work? Does it bring a tear to my eye when I catch a glance of the seasoned bullcross asleep in his kennel living out his days? The answer as I am sure you know is yes to all. So unless you guessed my dogs are the best, as are fox droppers to him and Wirral countrymans to him and so on. So enjoy what you get from your dogs as every time they please you, every time they exceed expectations, at that moment they are the best of dogs. P.s. wm black dog are the best ha ha ha sorry couldn't help myself Edited December 17, 2012 by swag 6 Quote Link to post

CorkyJohn 808
I understand your points made in regards to the law & working style of terrier WC. However, I feel that working terriers would be in decline on a much bigger scale if everyone kept bolters/bayers which they were happy to breed from. I've heard it said before about hard dogs being worthless, having to spend time laid up. Give me the hard dog any day that can be dropped in the awkward earth with few stop ends that a bayer has been given the runaround for hours & get a result to stop the messing on. One thing i've noticed is the lads who insist on bolters & bayers always have excuses for their dogs. You've been in the game far longer than me mate but a single dig counts for alot more than numerous bolts JMO Edited December 17, 2012 by CorkyJohn 1 Quote Link to post
johnny 777 53
Wouldn't want my dogs smashed up and laid up for weeks at a time Quote Link to post

Lol. I'd say very much a exception to the breed from what I gather from both sides of the fence on this thread? Is that dog in your avatar your current dog? Quote Link to post
johnny 777 53
Rather have a dog that uses its brain than a dog that goes in all guns blazing in certain situations Quote Link to post
fireman 10,932
I'd say future owners of either breed would need to use their brains and think what they need from a terrier before they get one. 2 Quote Link to post
swag 54
Lets just cut the bullshit johny777 your waffle is getting boring, how many dogs have you owned in your life time that allows you to forge your opinion, show us some proof of these dogs, it should be easier as you are blessed with such lightly marked bayers. Truth is you haven't the experience or the arsehole to handle a real digging dog so you choose to hide behind the curtain of political correctness. When you choose a Plummer you choose second best that is the be all and end all. 4 Quote Link to post
