Keeping warm this winter

i dont use any heat in my run or kennel,

ive sat in my kennel on a cold night just to see how cold it is and tbh it wasnt bad ...

9 times out of 10 fresh bedding will be pulled out so i only bother putting it in when it starts getting really cold regullary

my dogs always come out fresh as a daisy with no stifness ....

 

now if it dropped well below freezing for any length of time id bring the dogs in on a night

my 2 curl up together on a bed board full of shreaded wax paper in an insulated dry, draught free kennel. there is a heat lamp in there but its only switched on in the worst of weather, ive tried it before on warmer nights and mine will go and lay down in the open run after a few minutes as there to hot

My kennel has 40mm of insulation all round and a plastic flap on the enterance, with good warm bedding. And even when it was down to -4 the other night it was still toastie warm in there. No heat from anything other than the 3 dogs. Seems ok to me.. I think they would get too hot with a heat lamp on.... That's just my kennel tho folks. And each to their own...

why do people assume that dogs wont curl up under heat? Mine will layout in the sun for hours but when under a heat lamp they still curl up to sleep. as i type this my old bitch is lay on her bed against a radiator thats full on and she isnt sprawled out ????

120 watt tubular heater, got mine off ebay, £15 delivered, a good rub down when they come in from a days outing, heater goes on if the weather is really bad , like today, flat out, wi legs akimbo in minutes

 

Are these any good then mate? Have seriously considered getting one of these when Ive finished coverting my brick shed into a kennel/run.

 

Another question is where abouts would you install it? High? Or low?

The more I read this thread, all I see is excuses for not having additional heat...... I've not yet read one REAL reason for not having it.... You all say the same thing .

 

So what's Evrybody so scared of with added heat.......? Is it the bill??

I bought one from Argos a few year back , and can honestly say it was wank,,, it would struggle to warm my pocket up...in fact 1 inch from it you couldn't feel anything".............. But maybe there are better ones out there, that thing I got was about 18 inch long,, I took it back the next day...

no nothing to do with elecy prices, the 2 in the kennels have been mainly without heat for 5 and 10yrs respectively with no ill effects, there is a heat lamp in the kennel and occasionally i do use it, but i think it makes me feel better more than the dogs if they were ment to have heating then their fur coats would come with a zip

That's true , it does make me feel better as well mate,, it does give me piece of mind.

 

But as others have said , earlier in the thread,, I'm certain they benefit from it

Maby im a bit soft, but Id sleep better knowing the outside working dog was sleeping with some heat, whilst the missus's pet dog sleeps indoors next to the radiator.

 

Have no problems with owners who choose not to use heat though, just personal prefrence.

Ferrets were also fed on bread and milk for years doesn't mean it was right does it ... None of my fathers dogs had heat lamps as there were no such thing years ago ... But times move on and we learn more and that means we can give our animals a better quality of life ... Just because dogs have a good natural coat it doesn't mean they are impervious to the cold the same as they can suffer in the heat .......
