I found that the bullies breed better on there own. the goldies and canarys should be fine, How big is the flight/flights/ TUFFTY
fireman 10,871
I've got a mixed aviary with a few different sorts of finches in there and i've had no trouble with either fighting or nest raiding really, there's been a sqabble or two but never a proper fight and to be honest the birds who do the most squabbling are a pair of goldies i have and that's between them, this week i've introduced my bullies and haven't had need for concern there either but come spring time the bullies will be in a flight of there own as i want the peace for them rather than fighting worries. There's only really problems at breeding time if the cocks have hens down and are feeling randy still so there'll try it on with other hens and the cocks end up clashing with each other, that's one of the reasons myself i put a couple of loose canary hens so they can take the pressure off the native hens and you end up with a few mules as a bonus ,but it is harder to keep track of the birds and pick up on illness etc in a bigger mixed aviary than if they were in smaller flights . Will add my birds do have a good space and i do feel if it were a smaller aviary then i would have fighting for space issues with breeding pairs. gnasher16 30,063
Cheers chaps.......it will be about 10 x 8.......so if my aviary was predominantly canaries and i wanted a few bull or goldfinch,s would i need to buy them in pairs......im not too fussed about breeding but i presume the birds are just happier in pairs ?..... If you want mainly canaries i would stick in a couple of cock goldies and a single bullie hen
fireman 10,871
The canaries will pair up with canaries and the finches with finches first, then if there's spare hens the cocks will serve them as well, you won't get mules out of native hens if there's native cocks of there sort in there but the native cocks will serve extra hens once their own native hens are at nest. Also the bully cock cannot mate with anything else but a bullie hen but a bullie hen will mate and produce with other cocks than a bullie, another is the chaffie cock has never produced a mule with a canary hen but the other way round canary cock x chaffie hen does produce, you also have the chance of hybrids with mixed native hens and cocks as well.More hens than cocks is what you want to end up with no matter what the types of birds and then there'll be no squabbling over hens by the cocks come spring,i will add it's a lot down to trial and error and a lot of luck in this bird game and all we can do is give them the chance and try them, the rest is up to old ma nature at the end of the day .
