Take him out once a day some where quiet before feeding him, walk him on the lead for a while... then let him off try to recall 4-5 times if he does this give him lots of praise then take him striaght home & feed him, in doing this will encourage the dog that when he listens & does what he is told not only does he get praise he gets fed aswell.

try it no promise's but it works for me everytime & not only with recall pretty much any training i wish to teach the dog...

I have just brought a Bull/Whippet bitch shes 16weeks i use the same method.

hope it works for you mate, be patient dogs are not thick just sometimes very stuburn!

i know what im writing is exzactly what you are asking but this is what i do with a young pup and if your young pup doesnt come in keep walking away if you still cant get her in just sit down and wait dont pay no attention and she will come mate and i wouldnt be taking the pup out lamping to watch at that age maybe at 8 months but 5 months is too young imo

this is what i do with my put she has just gone 3 nhalf months...

i started to walk her some where quiet for ten minutes off the lead doing recall then put her on the lead and goto a place that is not wide enough for a young teenager to lay in but has some lengh so she only has one way to come back which is to me i throw the dummy 4 times then on the other day i will use a tennis ball i trained her every other day i did this as soon as she was aloud out now i have moved onto open fields still only retrieving four times and she does it 100% and she jumps and retrieves now as well only 4 ft if im honest i would watch purdys progress follow every step you cant go wrong on the dvd i wouldnt do the show training he does as wouldnt need my lurcher to that but he know his stuff hope this helps ya as this pup i have is 100% for her age and thats what i have done and she is coming upto 4 months now

Thanks for the advice , tbh I think he's a bit hand shy, I've had him lamping for a few month jus watching and he's very keen , but the problem is he is asociating lamping with playing , so I've stoped taking him ,he's also compleatly ignorant , I shouT and scream his name and he jus does his own thing

Well maybe don't take him out lamping until he's a bit mature, he's being a pup and wants to play he's only 5 months there ain't no rush. Play with the pup first let him lose Abit of energy THEN start the training, recall retrieve etc. Atb

i had the exact same problem but with my terrier he would ignore me and do what ever he wanted to do id shout him he would look at me then carry on what he was doing so i started to turn the oposite way and start walkig away from him then shout him and keep walking and he would come running back then when he gets to me give him praise and now hes spot on comes straight back. its easier said than done but never get mad with the dog or hit it when youve recalled him he will never learn that way and just think everytime i go back i get a crack

Sounds as if every time he comes to you,you grab at him.It makes them very hand shy.You need to put a harness on him,get a gun dog whistle and every time you pip it ,give him a treat.Get this 100 percent indoors,in the garden and then out side.Do not grab him.Clip the lead to the harness and make a fuss of him.If you shouted and screamed at me i would,nt come anywhere near you.
